"Questo libro è stato scritto tre decenni fa e pubblicato originariamente in portoghese e spagnolo (in Brasile e Argentina). Abbraccia poco più di mezzo secolo di storia, dalle origini dei primi gruppi trotskisti in America latina alla prima metà degli anni '80. Al momento della sua pubblicazione, sul tema non esistevano praticamente studi accademici o di qualsiasi altra natura. La principale eccezione era 'Trotskyism in Latin America' [1973], del prof. Robert J. Alexander (della Hoover Institution, nell'Università di Stanford, Usa), e un articolo di Pierre Broué nei Cahiers Léon Trotsky (che erano pubblicati in Francia sotto la direzione dello stesso Broué). Abbastanza poco, come si vede. La prima opera è essenzialmente un catalogo diviso per paesi e con varie imprecisioni (benché l'autore disponesse dei notevoli fondi documentali della Hoover Institution). Alexander, inoltre, non ha mai nascosto il suo anticomunismo militante. L'articolo di Broué, dal canto suo, riguardava solo il primo decennio di attività del movimento trotskista nel continente (1930-1940). Abbiamo redatto i testi che compongono questo nostro libro durante il periodo dell'ultima dittatura militare argentina (1976-1984), che ci ha costretti all'esilio in Francia e poi in Brasile (dove attualmente sono ordinario di Storia contemporanea nell'Università di São Paulo)."
