A pacifist during the First World War he was active in French politics especially the French Section of the Workers' International serving as a mayor and a member of the French Chamber of Deputies. He was originally denied a visa to lecture in the U.S. in 1920 due to his politics and being the grandson of Karl Marx. After the French radicals split into 2 parties Longuet divorced himself from the Russian Soviet communists joining force with Leon Bloom and becoming one of the leaders of the Left-Wing Conservative Socialists.
