Bound in original brick red cloth with gilt lettering and hunting/fishing insignia and image of a teepee on front board. Boards edgeworn and scuffed small area of dampstain visible on rear endpapers abrasion to front free endpaper where a label was removed. Binding sound text clean. Shields 1846-1925 wrote extensively on sporting topics under the pen-name Coquina before establishing Recreation: A Monthly Magazine Devoted to Everything the Name Implies in 1894. Between 1897 and 1902 he was head of the Campfire Club of America. In this book he offers practical information on a range of outdoorsy topics including clothing and personal equipment bedding and sleeping bags tents guns and rigles fishing tackles selecting horses and tack selecting a good guide food for camping chosing a campsite making a campfire and what to do if you get lost. At the end are three chapters contributed by other authors: Camp Hygeine Medicine and Surgery by Dr. Charles Gilbert Davis; Camp Cookery by Col. J. Fry Lawrence; and How to Load a Pack-Horse by Frank F. Frisbee. The total edition was 356 examples of which 53 were destroyed. 8 1/2 x 9 3/4" 15 x 20 inches matted. A very detailed etching typical of the meticulous style of Arms renowned for his prolific printmaking specifically of Gothic architecture. <br/><br/>Julian P. Boyd was a librarian 1940-52 and later history professor at Princeton University. His preservation work regarding the site of the Battle of Hastings led to his appointment of honorary Commander of the Order of the British Empire. His scholarship of The Papers of Thomas Jefferson edited from 1944 until his death have been deemed most influential and have set a new standard for reliability and accuracy in historical editing. unknown books
