Bound in original brick red cloth with gilt lettering and hunting/fishing insignia and image of a teepee on front board. Boards edgeworn and scuffed small area of dampstain visible on rear endpapers abrasion to front free endpaper where a label was removed. Binding sound text clean. Shields 1846-1925 wrote extensively on sporting topics under the pen-name Coquina before establishing Recreation: A Monthly Magazine Devoted to Everything the Name Implies in 1894. Between 1897 and 1902 he was head of the Campfire Club of America. In this book he offers practical information on a range of outdoorsy topics including clothing and personal equipment bedding and sleeping bags tents guns and rigles fishing tackles selecting horses and tack selecting a good guide food for camping chosing a campsite making a campfire and what to do if you get lost. At the end are three chapters contributed by other authors: Camp Hygeine Medicine and Surgery by Dr. Charles Gilbert Davis; Camp Cookery by Col. J. Fry Lawrence; and How to Load a Pack-Horse by Frank F. Frisbee.
