"16" in ink at upper right-hand corner of title page. This report of the committee of the Pennsylvania Senate declared that bridges erected from Zane's Island to both Virginia and Ohio obstructed the navigation of the Ohio River impacting the movement of steamboats and other boats to and from the port of Pittsburg. This was part of a case that concluded before the U.S. Supreme Court in 1855 as Pennsylvania v. Wheeling & Belmont Bridge Co. 59 U.S. 18 How. 421 commonly known as the Wheeling Bridge Case. All boards loose front board of volume 2 detached. Both title labels are present in good condition. Bottom 2 panels of 5 of spine of volume 2 are missing including volume number panel'; bottom panel of spine of volume 1 missing. Text is in very good condition. Both volumes are in archival acetate jackets. Judge Cox was impeached for holding court while intoxicated. Copy of esteemed Stillwater pioneers 1858 District Judge William M. and Helen Jencks McCluer. This copy bears presentation bookplate to the Stillwater Public Library in Mrs. H. A. McCluer's name. Judge McCluer's signature is on the front endpaper of both volumes. Mrs. McCluer established the Stillwater Women's Reading Club in 1886 which endured for over 130 years. The club helped to found the Stillwater Carnegie Public Library in 1897. One tradition of the club has continued: when a Womanâ_x0080__x0099_s Reading Club member dies the club presents a book in her honor to the Stillwater Public Library or the Bayport Public Library.
