Sallust was a famed Roman historian and politician . He was tribune of the people (52 B.C.) and praetor (46). He was ejected (50) from the senate ostensibly for adultery, but more probably because of his partisanship for Caesar. He served with Caesar after his praetorship and was his governor in Numidia; he was subsequently accused of misusing his governorship for personal gain. His principal works are the Bellum Catilinae, on the conspiracy of Catiline and his account of the Jugurthine War, Bellum Jugurthinum. His history of Rome is extant only in fragments; it probably covered the period 78 B.C. to 67 B.C. As a historian Sallust was important as one of the first to write historical monographs dealing with sharply limited events and periods. Although his style is consciously archaic, it is distinguished by its terseness and directness. His character sketches are particularly impressive and vivid, and his work has found as many imitators as critics - Columbia Encyclopedia. Very Scarce. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! SMALL BOX 2/Ron4

42 pages. A fascinating and important issue devoted to rousing American anger against Germany, particularly as a result of U.S. lives lost in the sinking of the Lusitania. Clearly, the people behind Life Magazine wanted the United States to become involved in WWI. Readers may draw parallels to recent history when 'fanatical Muslims' allegedly carried out the 9/11 attack, thus providing a pretext for George W. Bush to thrust his country into war in the Middle East. Covers detached from textblock. Last page almost loose. Unmarked. Led by Arthur Thistlewood the event known as the Cato Street Conspiracy was an attempt to murder all of the ministers and prime minister of King George IV in 1820. Motivated in part by the economic depression of the period the conspirators wished to avenge earlier protests suppressed by the state such as the Paterloo Massacre. The conspirator's goal was to overthrow the government and initiate a revolution similar to the French Revolution. Catalogue of the Library of the Harvard Law School 1909 II:1206. unknown books
pp. 48, 392, (1) + Three plates engraved by Charles Nicolas Cochin (1715-1790) + Engraved headpiece. Woodcut printer's device. Small 8vo. [146 x 85 mm.] All edges gold gilt. Wide margins. Fine contemporary full French olive morocco gilt binding. Silk doublures. Manuscript Crozat (1813) ownership. Leather gold Ex Libris of Dudley C. Majoribanks. Dudley Coutts Marjoribanks, 1st Baron Tweedmouth, also known as the Laird of Guisachan and Glenaffric (18201894), was a Scottish businessman and a Liberal politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1853 until 1880, when he was elevated to the peerage as Baron Tweedmouth. Beautifully printed and handsomely bound edition that appears to be essentially the sheets of the 1744 edition with a new title page. Includes a life of Sallust by Etienne Andre Philippe de Pretot (d. 1787). A brief history of the Barbou Classics is given by Schweiger (II 1269). In 1742 Lenglet de Fresnoy persuaded Coustelier to start a series which was meant to be a French rival to the Elzeviers - even surpassing them in terms of scholarship and typography. Though this effort soon exhausted itself, it was revived by Jean Joseph Barbou in 1753. Seven of these attractive little books appeared in 1753-1755, and though there were more issued in the next decade, there was not enough market interest to support a sustained publishing program. They still stand as a monument to French scholarship and typography. Brunet V:87. Very scarce. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! SMALL BOX 3
Sm. folio, 3 leaves, BLACK-LETTER throughout, with fine woodblock arms of William III on front cover and woodblock illuminated capital on first page of text; disbound, uncut, a remarkably crisp, clean copy. 8 Gulielmi III.The death of Queen Mary in 1695 isolated William as an object of Jacobite hatred; the motive for his assassination being the stronger since his death would no longer leave her in occupation of the throne. In February James II moved to Calais and the Jacobite conspirators moved to action. As William drove home to Kensington Palace from his weekly outing in Richmond Park he had to pass along a narrow and muddy lane near Turnham Green. Here he was to be surrounded and murdered. This was the most serious of the several plots against him, but the plotters' security was lax and on 24 February William announced in parliament knowledge both of the plan and of the proposed invasion from France. This act arraigns Sir George Barclay and a number of lesser Jacobites including Johnson alias Harrison, Durant alias Durance, Michael Hare, Major George Holmes, Philip Hanford alias Browne, Richard Richardson, John Maxwell, Bryerly, Plowden and Hungate.Conspirators already languishing in Newgate are named as Counter, [Major ] John Bernardi, Robert Cassells, Robert Meldrum, James Chambers and Robert Blackbourne.

"Prentice-Hall drastically slashed its print run and advertising budget, despite the book's having met its advance sales target and won wide acceptance in reviews across the country. The almost immediate (and reportedly unprecedented) cancellation by BOMC (Book of the Month Club) of a book under such circumstances would have a chilling impact on most publishers, and Prentice-Hall was no exception. They allowed the book to go out of stock while demand for it remained high, and ultimately let it go out of print altogether." - Foreword. The above was discovered only after the author took Du Pont and Prentice-Hall to federal court. "I have tried, with admittedly humble resources, to explain what the Du Ponts and their extraordinary history mean for American society, its past and its future." - Foreword. Book clean and unmarked with average wear. Binding intact. Dust jacket not included. A sound copy of this important work. Book
