Stitched pamphlet with a simple string tie at the spine The binding is worn with creases and chips along the edges. Several dam spots at the fore edge and at the bottom of the title page which is the front cover. Browning and foxing to the text. The issue was the claims of members and descendants of the Continental Line during the American Revolution who were supposed to receive land grants in the western part of Carolina afterwards Tennessee. George Edmund Badger 1795-1866 was a superior court judge Secretary of the Navy and was a U.S. Senator originally from New Bern North Carolina. In 1828 he supported Andrew Jackson as President but he opposed the National Bank so he joined the newly formed Whig Party. In 1840 he was appointed as Secretary of the Navy and he did much to modernize the Navy setting the foundation for the Atlantic Fleet and investing in research for new types of Ordinance and weapons. At the outset of the Civil War he was a delegate from Wake County to the Secession Convention of 1861. Quite Scare. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED at front end page - "The great 'Beyond' and other places South of Hoboken- Beer and Skittles Alan Innes-Taylor" and "From one deep-sea diver to another Charles L. Kessler" and additionally SIGNED AND INSCRIBED at half-title page -"The top of the world with City of New York Wm. W. Darling" along with rubber-stamped "Byrd's South Pole Ship / A Century of Progress / 1933". The author lists Kessler as seaman and helmsman Innes-Taylor as dog-man and chief in handling and attending to the health and well-being of the sled dogs. Darling is described as a fireman and a hard worker and "The City of New York" was Byrd's flagship for the expedition. A great ASSOCIATION COPY given the personalization of the inscriptions seemingly presented to a fellow expedition member who almost certainly is Dr. Dana Coman medical director on the expedition as this title came with 2 other titles definitely from Coman's collection. The book is Very Good in the original green cloth stamped in gilt front board and spine with faint image of ship stamped front board and a penguin to spine illustrated with black and white photos. . A few marginal marks and notations in ink most notably at Coman's bio p. 229 where the notation reads "Oh ! that there were more poets in this funny old world". With two parts of the dust wrapper laid in comprising most of the front wrapper and roughly half of the rear hence wrapper is Good only. M.A. Donohue & Co. Hardcover
