New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (30 x 21 cm). In English. 605 p., b/w ills. The present volume seeks primarily to present a heterogeneous and extensive assessment of the state-of-the art in international maritime history, perceived from various points of view, giving priority to the analysis and interpretation of new archival documentation that was previously unknown, or little explored. The aim of this publication is thus to add, as much as possible, to the general body of knowledge in global maritime history, and to contribute to a substantial reflection on Turkish maritime history. A collection of fifty-seven articles offers various written and iconographic sources, with explanatory texts, both of European and non-European origin, with a natural accent in micro-history studies. The chronological approach that was followed was rather broad, affording some emphasis on the lower medieval period, and the early modern and contemporary era. Complementary studies explore earlier periods where the foundations of seapower, supported by advances in technology and gains in trade, were laid for history in the making.

New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 390 p. Istanbul's great war: Public order, crime and punishment in the Ottoman capital, (1914-1918). Istanbul's Great War: Public Order, Crime and Punishment in the Ottoman Capital, 1914-1918 is a study of the social and economic life in an imperial capital at a time when the first total war of history swept through Europe, hitting the entire Ottoman Empire up to its borderlands in the Arab Peninsula. The book focuses on the impact of wartime conditions on life in a city of nearly a million citizens, with a specific emphasis on public order, crime and punishment. The author, Deniz Dölek-Sever, takes us through a six-chapter panorama of four years of hardship in the Ottoman capital during the war, analyzing various aspects of public order, crime and punishment as experienced daily by both Muslim and non-Muslim inhabitants of Istanbul, and as perceived by the state. In doing so, her study uncovers inner workings behind state officials' policies on public order and crime. Tracing instruments of surveillance and control and various crime categories, and making extensive use of primary sources, the work provides a unique understanding of public order and crime, as well as practices of punishment in a period when the Committee of Union and Progress reigned over the political life of the Ottoman Empire. Istanbul's Great War is an attempt to bring a fresh approach to the current literature on wartime Ottoman Empire.

New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English and Turkish. 310 p., ills. Nomads in the Ottoman Empire.= Osmanli döneminde konar-göçerler. The Turks migrated originally from Central Asia to Anatolia between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries. Most of them were sedentary communities. However, a significant portion was nomads, called Oghuz, or Türkmen, at that time. These nomads used to move between regions identified as summer pasturages and winter quarters in order to graze their animals. Therefore, their lifestyle was substantially different from sedentary life. Even after Anatolia was brought under Ottoman rule by the end of the first quarter of the 16th century, they continued their traditional lifestyle. During the Ottoman conquests, these nomads migrated to the Balkans in accordance with the policy pursued by the state. The nomads in the Balkans were generally organized as military units. During the Ottoman period the nomads were known by the names of Türkmen and Yörük or Yürük. These names were generally used to describe their way of life, rather than their ethnic origin. However, these terms were often sed interchangeably. At the same time, various other words were used for the nomads, such as 'Konar-göçer', 'Göçebe', 'Göçer-yörük', 'Göçerler', and 'Göçer-evliler'. The most common one among these was 'Konar-göçer'. All of these words are found in Ottoman archival documents and carry only the meaning of 'nomad'. Geographically, the nomads of the Ottoman period spread from Anatolia to the Balkans and formed an important portion of the Ottoman population. Despite this fact, research remains insufficient regarding the nomadic peoples. The reason for this has been keener isterest by historians in Turkey concerning the foundation of the Turkish Republic and political and administrative issues rather than nomadism. Research in Ottoman social history was not popular among these historians. However, as research on Ottoman social history grew, so did interest in nomadic populations.
