390 pages. In this landmark book, many of the best minds in "English Canada" set out their position and agenda vis-a-vis the Quebec crisis. They argue cogently for Canada's survival as a tolerant, purposeful, independent state, with or without Quebec. Brings a much needed dose of clarity and realism to the questions raised by Quebec's demands for greater powers and possible separation. Addresses possible solutions and looks at the processes of accommodation, renewal or separation. In so doing, it provides a crucial definition of "English Canada" today. Very light wear. Clean, bright and unmarked. Book

It has its own physical history that imbues it with a character lacking in ephemeral electronic renderings.; 8vo; 527 pages; Clean and tight in binding of red half leather over red cloth with gilt lettering at spine and front cover; spine is titled "The Trial of Senator Warren T. Thayer" marbled endpapers. OCLC: 183227216 In 1934 the Federal Trade Commission revealed letters written to Associated Gas & Electric Co. by New York State Senator Warren T. Thayer who was one-time chairman of the powerful Public Service Committee. In the letters Thayer expressed the hope that his services had been "satisfactory" to the big holding company adding that although he hadn't managed to get some pieces of legislation passed; he had been able to block several that would have negatively impacts the utility holding companies. The Governor demanded a sweeping investigation not only of suspicious relations between public officials and public utilities but of New York's entire utility industry. Senator Thayer responded by introducing a resolution calling for his own investigation. The Governor was furious thinking this investigation would prove to be a whitewash and would sidetrack his own inquiry. An investigation did take place with Paul J. Macauley acting as counsel and Thayer was found guilty of misconduct and forced to resign. This book contains all the excerpts from several journals of the Senate for the year 1934 comprising its proceedings had prior to and in conjunction with the investigation requested by Warren T. Thayer. The book is warmly inscribed on the first blank from Paul J. Macauley counsel for the Judiciary Committee to Abraham N. Davis a fellow Counsel to the Committee. A unique association copy of this fascinating case of political corruption during the New Deal era. . J.B. Lyon Company hardcover
