Unbound<br/> <br/>A contemporary official printed list of American vessels with spoliation claims issued by the Secretary of State in the midst of the negotiations over Jay's Treaty.<br/> <br/>In 1793 and 1794 the British captured numerous neutral American merchant ships during its conflict with France including ships in both European and North American waters. The Secretary of State here issued an official list of 304 American merchant vessels -- including the ship's name as well as the names of the masters and owners -- for distribution among port collectors compiled "from the record of the Cases in the office of the Department of State." The terms of Jay's Treaty would include compensation for the vexations and spoliations with the British eventually paying out over $10000000 by 1802. A rare and ephemeral early American document. First edition limited to 70 signed and numbered copies large 8vo 11.75" x 7.50" pp. 24; hand set Walbaum type designed by Justus Erich Walbaum circa 1803 in Germany. Baker is used for the display designed by Russell Maret in Rome in 2010 and cast in metal by Ed Rayher in 2016. The text is printed letterpress on dampened Langley handmade in 1986 at the Barcham Green Hayle Mill an English paper mill long closed. Two watermarks can be seen throughout one of which includes the date. The cover is persimmon-washed Belgian flax paper handmade at Cave Paper in Minneapolis Minnesota. The artwork consists of photographs by Carolee Campbell of selected details from the first in a series of large-scale two-fold wood engravings by Gaylord Schanilec showing a flock of American White Pelicans Pelecanus erythrorhynchos taking off from the shore along Lake Pepin. The engravings are inserted into the 2015 Midnight Paper Sales publication Lac des Pleurs Report from Lake Pepin by Gaylord Schanilec. Both engravings and text were printed by Schanilec at his press in Stockholm Wisconsin. The photographs were executed in 2019 with permission especially for this edition of Departures. The photographs were printed digitally on Japanese Nyodo Kozo-shi using Epson UltraChrome K3 inks. The design presswork binding and photography are by Carolee Campbell at Ninja Press with the assistance of Farida Sunada in the bindery. Well known as a master of the wood engraving and fine press printer publishing under the imprint of Midnight Paper Sales with Departures Schanilec brings his particular poetic voice to the page in this inaugural volume of poems. <br/><br/> Ninja Press unknown books

Handsome engraved map of Missouri produced by Surveyor General William Milburn's office in St. Louis in October of 1839 and lithographed by William Stone in Washington. The map depicts township divisions rivers including the Mississippi and Missouri lakes and the names of several important towns including St. Louis Jefferson Fayette Lexington and Palmyra. 1913008484Shelbyville Indiana: No Publisher 1913. RARE collection of 13 real photo postcards depicting the historic March 25 1913 flood of the Big and Little Blue Rivers in Shelbyville Indiana still Indiana's worst flood on record. Caused by thick winter snows followed by 2 months of heavy rains that culminated in the deluge of March 25 compared by some locals to a waterspout. The flood washed out bridges and culverts including the iron bridge over the Flat Rock River and caused a train wreck at nearby St. Paul pictured in two of the postcards. While over 20% of the population was made homeless no lives were lost. It took a week before the first train could arrive and a month before the inter-urban could return. Even the Mayor of Chicago offered to send help. "Shelbyville Indiana Flood of 1913" Ron Hamilton Shelby County Indiana Historian. The post cards are Near Fine 7 cards with the manuscript names of two local prior owners and some brief inked descriptions to versos.
