The book and its contents are in mostly clean bright condition. The book covers have ground-in dirt and several spots to the front and rear covers. The text pages are clean and bright. The front and rear endpapers have noticeable toning. "Judge Hebbard was a Superior Court Judge for the San Francisco area during the early 1900's -- it seems that in 1907 he had some run-ins with other members of the bar due to some excessive imbibing and a period of despondency which he showed a bit too widely when he tried to kill himself during an annual Bar Association dinner. Front board detached; ownership signature Thomas Knight 1829 with four line note "Collection of Irish History from the reign of Elizabeth etc. front endpaper. Thomas Knight's name also written vertically accross top portion of title page. At the end of the half page of text on xii begins in a miniscule holograph hand presumed by Knight an account of Lady Davies who according to the preceeding Author's Life "had or pretended to have a spirit of prophecy" and it was reported that she predicted her husband's death the Sunday before his being found dead of an apoplexy on the morning of Thursday 8th of December 1626 just before his installation as Lord Chief Justice of the King's Bench. The writing continues onto the next blank page printed oddly with only the words HISTORICAL RELATIONS the preceeding page also having the word HISTORICAL printed below the text apparently relating an anecdote about Lady Davies who having made prophecies of bad luck for the Duke of Buckingham and other predictions of a mischevious nature was brought before the High Commission where the proceedings apparently involved her claims of the prophet Daniel infused into her body based on an anagram of her name Eleanor Davies and ultimately being "shot with arrows from her own quiver" by the Bishop suggesting Dame Eleanor Davies - never so mad a lady. RARE -SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR on end page following half-title page - " To an old and tried friend Dana Coman. Arthur Walden Sept. 1/30". In 1927 Walden helped train sled dogs and drivers for Admiral Richard E. Byrd's Antarctic expedition and he led the dog-sled freighting of the supplies from the ships to Byrd's base camp "Little America". Walden later became the original breeder of the Chinook sled dog. In 1930 Walden considered to be one of the most respected and heralded pioneers of the Klondike and Alaskan gold rushes was presented a photographic album by Admiral Byrd that contained over 500 images of the Antarctic expedition of 1928-30. Dana Coman Dr Francis Dana Coman 1895-1952 was with Byrd's first and second expeditions to Antarctica and was a personal doctor of Admiral Byrd. He later had a mountain named after him by Finn Ronne of the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition of 1947-48. Later Printing of this northland classic no date title page dated 1928 copyright page. Introduction by Walter Collins O'Kane. Illustrated with map end pages 12 black and white photos 9 attributed to noted Pacific Northwest photographer Asahel Curtis brother of the renowned photographer Edward Curtis 3 photos unattributed. Book is Very Good two quarter-sized stains rear boards that bleed onto rear end pages but do not affect text some underlining and marginal notations in ink by Dr. Coman. In the SCARCE dust jacket Good only 1/2" of jacket trimmed top and bottom and lacking the flaps. A great ASSOCIATION COPY. Houghton Mifflin Hardcover
