A tight and nice first edition of this first important history of the state rebound 1968 in library buckram. Second state with "1818" in title rather than "1814." Noted for its coverage of such events as the Black Hawk War the early Mormon history including the death of Joseph Smith and the murder of abolitionist Elijah Lovejoy in Alton this discreet ex-library copy with very few and mostly-removed markings hails from the Black Hawk War city of Galena in northwest Illinois where Ford himself briefly resided. Leather is a bit rubbed along edges with mild exposure at most corners a few light scuffs on spine and along joints but generally well preserved. Front folding map is a bit toned with slight separation at several fold junctures partial separation along one horizontal fold and short closed tear overall still decently preserved; rear folding map shows one closed tear across one of its eight panels otherwise fully intact.
