New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (22 x 15 cm). In English. 358 p., ills. Most of the articles contained in the present volume are of fairly recent vintage, having been published after 1990 and in quite a few instances, after 1995, They thus reflect the zeitgeist of the 1990s, which has been characterized by a return of interest in the individual, and also in small groups such as households, guilds or neighborhoods. If we look at this sea change from a point of view immament to the historical discipline, we can explain it as a reaction to the tendency, so typical of the 1960s and 1970s, to view social history as a mere adjunct to economic history. This latter view had been embraced by quite a few scholars of my generation, myself included, as a welcome alternative to the limited and limiting horizons of the 'old-style' political and diplomatic history. In the particular brabd of economic history which evolved during the 1970s and 1970s, long-term developments were accorded privileged treatment over and above short-term oscilliations, deemed of lesser importance. Yet the latter, even though they may have been compensated for within a couple of years or so, quite often constituted the significant factor, at least where real people were concerned. Short term fluctuations affected the lives of ordinary people in a more dramatic fashion than most long-term tendencies, which, when all is said and done, had an impact mainly in the long run. In his seminal work how famine killed off more than half a family of Beauvais weavers. He ended his depressing story with the remark "and all that on account of the bread price"- seventeenth-century grain prices being notorious for their instability. Without any doubt, bread became cheaper again within a very few years; but that was of no help to the dead.
New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 195 p. Stories and memories of Bodrum's Jewish community. Some may know Bodrum as a pleasant vacation spot in Southwestern Turkey. Few, however, would know this town as the home of a small but influential Jewish community that thrived until the mid-20th century. In this book, artist and researcher C. M. Kösemen uses historic sources and interviews to flesh out the first comprehensive overview of this little-known Sephardic community. Here you will find compelling stories and poignant memories; of ancient Jewish settlements in the remote corners of the Bodrum peninsula; of pleasant family relations between Turks and Jews; of wartime hardships and near-escapes; of people like Janet Akyüz Mattei, who went on to become one of the world s greatest astrophysicists; of Abraham Galante the historian; and more Illustrated with detailed black-and-white photographs and annotated with footnotes that explain local nuances, this book also contains a touristic itinerary of Judaic sites in the vicinity of Bodrum.

New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. 512 p. Ills. "This book approaches the Ottoman period of Robert College, founded by American missionaries in Constantinople in 1863, by focusing on hitherto insufficiently explored aspects of its sesquicentennial history, related to its nature and educational ideals, as well as to its student body. Being based on the college's archives, dispersed in Turkey and the United States, the government archives of Ottoman and early republican period, as well as other vernacular archives, the book delineates the specific place and role of the college in the field of Ottoman education by promoting Protestant ideals through liberal education. The so-called "secular Protestantism" affected the whole concept of education practiced at the college and it affected more or less the students' mindset. The college put emphasis on the formation of strong characters in its students so as to make them able to take responsibility for their own life and development. It was achieved, not only nor even mainly through the course of studies in a wide variety of fields, but also through the all-round atmosphere in the college and especially the personal relationship between the students and their instructors. On the basis of statistics drawn from various relevant sources, the book traces out the dynamics in student enrollment and outlines those periods in the college's history in which certain nationalities were prevalent, not only in terms of physical presence but also in terms of influence in the student body. The book provides also prosopographical research of the Bulgarian and Turkish students, based on data collected from the catalogues of students, preserved in the college's archives. Orlin Sabev (Orhan Salih by birth), born in Shumen (Bulgaria) in 1970, is Associate Professor at the Institute of Balkan Studies with Centre for Thracology of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (Sofia). He obtained a Ph. D. in history at the same institute in 2000. He has published three books, two of them in Bulgarian, dealing with history of Ottoman education in the Bulgarian lands between fifteenth and eighteenth century (2001) and with the introduction of the first Ottoman Turkish printing press in Constantinople (2004). The latter came out also in Turkish translation in 2006 under the title 'Ibrahim Müteferrika ya da ilk Osmanli Matbaa Serüveni (1726-1746). Yeniden Degerlendirme'. Since then the Turkish translation has three editions. He has more than hundred articles dealing with various topics in the field of education, book history, print culture, and sexuality in Ottoman society.".

New English Original cloth bdg. Folio. (31 x 26 cm). In English and Turkish. 290 p., color and b/w ills. A portion, previously not fully explored, of historical information about Al-Quds/Jerusalem is embodied in the postcards and souvenir objects featuring the city. These items, that were posted or kept by visitors, are assets of cultural heritage and hold anthropological value both for their own sake and for the thoughts and purposes attached to them. "Souvenir of Jerusalem" sheds light on this valuable legacy. The book contains reproductions of postcards, posters, and photographs of various objects that Mr. Murat Kargili had assembled in his personal collection and supplemented with annotations. The book came out in IRCICA s series of studies on al-Quds and Palestine. Earlier IRCICA published albums of historical photographs of al-Quds (Al-Quds/Jerusalem in historical photographs, 2009; Jerusalem in Historical Photographs From Past to Present, 2015) but this is the first publication to focus on postcards and artefacts. The first chapter of the book is reserved to postcards, with annotations on the quarters, structures and scenes of life. The second chapter contains a large variety of printed materials such as posters, trade cards, gravures and maps featuring a fascinating range of subjects and objects. The last chapter is devoted to souvenir objects acquired from Jerusalem. IRCICA is pleased to publish this album which mirrors Al-Quds of the late 19th early 20th centuries. The said album came out in a deluxe edition printed on archival-quality paper. It features more than 150 printed materials such as postcards, maps, engravings, posters, trade cards and pictures of souvenir objects which will take the reader on a journey to Al-Quds; this main sacred city that has seen the longest state rule in its history under Muslims administration.
