Joints somewhat worn on all volumes; weak on volumes 10 12 and 14 with both boards detached but present on volume 9. Green buckram over bevelled boards gilt cover-title within oval frame and triple-filet border gilt portcullis device on rear board folio 38 cm. 19 1 pp ills. Includes the text of Winston Churchill's speech at the occasion. Churchil's bibliographers claim that the standard issue of this volume was in wrappers for presentation to Members of Parliament and a limitation statement in the volume records that 24 copies on handmade paper were specially bound in morocco for those who attended the ceremony. But the specimens that appear in the market from time to time seem to be like ours - bound in greebn buckram and not on handmade paper. The Representation of the People Act of 1918 granted the vote to women over the age of 30 who met a property qualification. The same Act gave the vote to all men over the age of 21. As a result of this act 8.5 million women joined the electorate and made up almost 40% of all voters in the United Kingdom. This was a great victory for the women's suffrage movement which had been calling for voting rights since the 1830s. Militant suffrage groups in the UK were even known for campaigns of destruction and mayhem in order to keep their issue in the forefront of everyone's minds. unknown books
