This copy is in brown calf leather with marbled boards both boards and leather are scuffed and rubbed but it presents very nicely nonetheless. There is a repair to the interior front hinge rather too strongly done so the endpaper and board stick together too much and pull a little when opening. That said it's solid. The book is largely clean and bright inside with some foxing and offsetting around the engraved plates. The folding map and the plan of Chichester are still present. Size: Octavo standard book size. 18583287Seaforth and Hanover: Unpublished manuscript book 1858. Hardcover. Good. ff 25 Oblong album missing rear cover with the calligraphic ownership inscription on behalf of ten year old Cromwell Stuart son of Peter Stuart of Seaforth north of Liverpool the Lancashire shipowner and lay homeopath. Cromwell Stuart was born in 1847 dying in South Africa at 22 with most of the inscribed pages dating from about a decade later. Presumably this was a gift from his parents which Peter took with him to Germany where most of the inscribed pages were undertaken usually offering a motto and inscription below sometimes with a drawing. Signers include Jose Francis da Sehra G J F Bruel Albert Knolcke Rothmeyer Ernst Sengstack August von Bothmer Louise Evers Magnus Mansfeldt F F Vollmer Marie Hogreive. The second volume only. Lacking volume I. First edition of this volume. Illustrated throughout. Lacking 'Remains of Latton Priory' and 'Latton Church' plates at page 21. Otherwise work is complete according to binder's instructions. Has a 'Chelmsford' plate as frontispiece not stated to binding instructions as well as a folding map of Essex. This work describes itself as a brief historical and topographical delineation of every town and village with descriptions of the residences of the nobility and gentry. It boasts that it is a complete guide to Essex for the traveller and tourist. Author not attributed to title page. Author is known as Thomas Kitson Cromwell. Cromwell was an English dissenting minister and antiquary. He also wrote works on the towns of Colchester and Clerkenwell. In a full calf binding. Rebacked with original boards preserved. Externally generally smart. Patches of slight rubbing to the extremities and spine. Loss to the calf of rear board at tail of joint due to rubbing. Rubbing to the spine is heaviest to the head and tail. Marks to boards. Evidence of bookplate removal to the front pastedown. Front endpaper has been removed. Front hinge is slightly strained but firm. Internally firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned. Scattered spotting to the first and last few pages otherwise the occasional scattered spots. In each volume is an 19th century bookseller's tag affixed to the bottom edge inside the upper board from "H. Sotheran & Co. Booksellers 140 Strand London". There is an inscription on a preliminary leaf stating the following; "Given to me in September 1919 at Hemstead Hall by Mrs. Barker as a memorial of her Father and my friend Sir R. H. Ingles Palgrave who died in January of that year in his 92' year. T. G. Bonney".
