Soldier and brilliant strategist controversial politician and statesman Cromwell would ultimately be sworn in as Lord Protector in December 1653. Though his is a checkered legacy Cromwell nevertheless made it possible ""for the first time in three and half centuries for Jews to live trade and worship openly in the City of London"" Schama II:235. Prior to Cromwell ""no private person had taken power to rule a great European kingdom no subject had taken it upon himself to sit in judgment on his lawful sovereign condemn him with the formality of a lawful process and publicly execute him as a criminal. In a country governed by custom precedent and the common law Cromwell completely changed the ancient frame of government reforming Parliament and imposing a written constitution"" Cannon 263. 18583287Seaforth and Hanover: Unpublished manuscript book 1858. Hardcover. Good. ff 25 Oblong album missing rear cover with the calligraphic ownership inscription on behalf of ten year old Cromwell Stuart son of Peter Stuart of Seaforth north of Liverpool the Lancashire shipowner and lay homeopath. Cromwell Stuart was born in 1847 dying in South Africa at 22 with most of the inscribed pages dating from about a decade later. Presumably this was a gift from his parents which Peter took with him to Germany where most of the inscribed pages were undertaken usually offering a motto and inscription below sometimes with a drawing. Signers include Jose Francis da Sehra G J F Bruel Albert Knolcke Rothmeyer Ernst Sengstack August von Bothmer Louise Evers Magnus Mansfeldt F F Vollmer Marie Hogreive.
