Details reports from Parliament in April 1657 during the Protectorate debating whether the Lord Protector Cromwell was to take the title of King. The book records the speeches arguing that he should take the crown as part of a revised constitution. It includes speeches from Cromwell. His final speech ends: "That I cannot undertake this Goverment with the Title of a King and that is mine answer to this great and weighty business." "Monarchy Asserted" was edited by Nathaniel Fiennes or by Sir Bulstrode Whitelocke both supporters of Oliver Cromwell. Samuel Rawson Gardiner’s illustrated biography of Cromwell who led parliamentary forces in the English Civil War helped depose and execute Charles I and served as lord protector of England Scotland and Ireland from 1653 until his death in 1658. Gardiner 1892-1902 was an English historian teacher at Oxford and popular lecturer. His major work was Constitutional Documents of the Puritan Revolution and he was also prolific in the ninth edition of Encyclopaedia Briannica.
