März 1873 in Fürth; † 1. Januar 1934 in Altaussee) war ein deutscher Schriftsteller. Er zählte zu den produktivsten und populärsten Erzählern seiner Zeit. ... Neben den Romanen schrieb Wassermann erfolgreiche Biographien (Christoph Columbus, 1929) und setzte seine Essayistik fort, in der er sich immer wieder auch mit der Existenzform des Juden in nichtjüdischer Umgebung befasste (Mein Weg als Deutscher und Jude, 1921) - zuletzt noch 1933, dem Jahr seines Ausschlusses aus der Preußischen Akademie der Künste, veröffentlichten Selbstbetrachtungen. Gleichzeitig mit der Bücherverbrennung 1933 in Deutschland wurden seine Bücher verboten, obwohl er bis dahin einer der meistgelesenen Autoren war. Das bedeutete für ihn nicht nur den materiellen Ruin, sondern vor allem den Zusammenbruch seiner lebenslang gehegten Hoffnungen, durch sein Werk mithelfen zu können, eine Welt des Friedens ohne nationale Spannungen und ohne Rassenhass aufzubauen. Contains a discussion of the holiday, with poems, selections from the Bible, Midrash, and Talmud detailing Chamishah Asar Bi'Shevat (Jewish arbor day celebrated on the fifteenth of Shevat) . “The mother of the Jew is Eretz Israel. The heart of every Jewish child is tied to his holy motherland […] And when this day comes, the fifteenth of Shevat, the day on which the yemot Ha'Geshamim, the period of heavy rainfall is over in Eretz Israel, and the sap begins to rise in its trees, awaking them to a new spring and new life” - pg 5. Bachad was a religious Zionist youth movement in pre-war Germany called Brit Chalutzim Datiim which shortened its name “to its initial letters Bachad. Its members prepared themselves for Aliya. A group of them came over to England among the refugees who were permitted to enter this country in the years immediately before the war. They were accommodated in a castle in Wales [Gwrych Castle] and set up Hachshara centres in Bromsgrove and other places, as well as a Merkaz Limmud in Manchester to which members came from the Hachsharah centres for periods of three or six months for intensive Jewish studies. Later on a farm was bought at Thaxted in Essex which became not only a model Hachsharah centre but very quickly a successful agricultural venture which at one time won first prize for having the best milk yielding cow in Essex! ” (bauk, 2013) . In the first part, I have studied the exile days of Sultan Abdülhamid II in Salonika (1909-1912). This chapter is a narrative of the 1278 days he had spent in exile between the night of 27 April 1909 when he was taken to Salonika by train and early morning of 1 November 1912 when he was brought to the Beylerbeyi Palace I have interrupted the chronological narrative of the events, and put subsections on the Villa Alâtini where he resided in Salonika; why he was exiled and why Salonika was chosen; his life and thoughts in exile; his guards and doctors in Salonika; and the excursion of Sultan Mehmed V Resad to Rumeli, and the "Salute of the Sultan.".In the second part, I have studied a phenomenon that occurred at the same time period that I focused in the first part: in several ways, Sultan Abdülhamid II's wealth was seized, or confiscated, as he had written in a letter titled "My Petition to the State, Nation, Parliament, and Soldiers." In this chapter, I have worked on the plunder in the Yildiz Palace; seizure of his real estate left to the use of Ministry of Finance as a guarantee for a loan in his name; the forced donation of his money and shares in national and foreign banks to be used for the Second and Third Ottoman Armies; seizure of his money found in the Yildiz Palace; the auction of the jewelry found in the Yildiz Palace for the benefit of the Donanma-i Osmânî Iâne-i Milliye Cemiyeti; and the story of the money and jewelry found in the Beylerbeyi Palace after his death.
