Creasing to spine. Light creasing to wraps. Minor shelfwear. ; The Ancient World; 410 pages; When democratic rule was ended by the conquering Macedonians in 322, the Athenians had evolved principles and practice of democratic ideology that became the direct inspiration of those liberal ideas cherished by the Western world in the 19th and 20th centuries. Mogens Hansen examines Athenian democracy both as a political system and as an ideology. In describing the former he distinguished between the three major decision-making organs - the Assembly, the Legislators and the Peoples Courts, and the magistrates who were responsible both for preparing the agenda for the legislature and for carrying its decisions into effect. In discussing Athenian democratic ideology Dr Hansen also makes the important distinction between the ideals held by the democrats themselves and those imputed to them by the critics of democracy, principally (and ironically, given that they would barely have survived under any other system) the philosophers. The Athenians conceived liberty both as the ability to participate in the decision-making process, and as the right to live without oppression from the state or other citizens. Equality was conceived not as an equality of nature, but as an equality of opportunity. "The Athenian Democracy in the Age of Demosthenes" is based on more than 30 years sustained research.

Very faint shelfwear to DJ. ; Xi, 216pp. By analyzing a selection of speeches of the Athenian orator Andokides and the decisions reached by his audience on each occasion, Dr. Missiou demonstrates that the orator had divergent perceptions, values and attitudes from those of his audience on a number of basic issues. By this means she challenges the criticism, frequently aimed at Athenian democracy, that the decisions of the Assembly during this period were irresponsible and irrational. In particular she ascribes the rejection of Andokides' proposals for peace with the Spartans in 391 BC to the incompatability between the subversive character of his speech, aimed at spreading pro-Spartan and anti-war feelings, and the socio-political needs and demands of his audience. ; Cambridge Classical Studies; 216 pages

DJ flaps are yellowed. ; 253 pages; This book is concerned with the public aspects of the life of Athenian citizens in the period from c. 450 to 322 BC. Its central purpose is a critical assessment of the character and extent of citizens' participation in the running of the democracy. Professor Sinclair's analysis is made from the point of view of the individual citizen--his privileges and opportunities, his responsibilities, the rewards and the dangers of exploiting the opportunities available to him.
Former owner's name and author's signature on ffep else fine. DJ has very minor shelfwear. ; 208 pages; In 404 BCE the Peloponnesian War finally came to an end, when the Athenians, starved into submission, were forced to accept Sparta's terms of surrender. Shortly afterwards a group of thirty conspirators, with Spartan backing ("the Thirty") , overthrew the democracy and established a narrow oligarchy. Although the oligarchs were in power for only thirteen months, they killed more than 5 percent of the citizenry and terrorized the rest by confiscating the property of some and banishing many others. Despite this brutality, members of the democratic resistance movement that regained control of Athens came to terms with the oligarchs and agreed to an amnesty that protected collaborators from prosecution for all but the most severe crimes. The war and subsequent reconciliation of Athenian society has been a rich field for historians of ancient Greece. From a rhetorical and ideological standpoint, this period is unique because of the extraordinary lengths to which the Athenians went to maintain peace. In Remembering Defeat, Andrew Wolpert claims that the peace was "negotiated and constructed in civic discourse" and not imposed upon the populace. Rather than explaining why the reconciliation was successful, as a way of shedding light on changes in Athenian ideology Wolpert uses public speeches of the early fourth century to consider how the Athenians confronted the troubling memories of defeat and civil war, and how they explained to themselves an agreement that allowed the conspirators and their collaborators to go unpunished. Encompassing rhetorical analysis, trauma studies, and recent scholarship on identity, memory, and law, Wolpert's study sheds new light on a pivotal period in Athens' history. ; Signed by Author
