Fine English Paperback. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In Turkish. 78 p., b/w ills. Victorya Islam Inas Sanayi Mektebi ve Kibrisli Türk kadinlarin haklari, (1902-1985). The Ottoman State had to leave the administration of Cyprus to the United Kingdom through the Treaty in 1878. Thus, the island of Cyprus was administered by the United Kingdom from 1878 until 1960. There were some regulations in every area, including education, on the island during the United Kingdom period. One of these regulations was the opening of new schools on the island. One of these schools was Victoria Girls' School, where girls on the island received education. After the establishment of the Lycee of Cyprus on the island in 1897, the Victoria Girls' School was opened in 1901. The British administration and the Turkish Cypriot philanthropists have come together to cover the construction costs of the Victorian school. In addition, the British colonial administration requested that the name of the school be Victorian in return for the assistance it made for the construction of the school. The school, which started its educational activities in 1902 despite its establishment in 1901, played an important role in the development of contemporary Turkish Cypriot women. Moreover, it can be said that the school had important impacts on the political, cultural and social life of the island. Meanwhile, the school played an important role in the adoption of the Ataturk's Revolutions in Cyprus. Thus, during and after the United Kingdom period, the Victorian Girls' School has become one of the most well-established schools of the island where the Turkish Cypriot girls were educated. In the research, it was explained in chronological order how this educational institution was established and through which phases it passed.

Very minor shelfwear to DJ. ; 208 pages; In 404 BCE the Peloponnesian War finally came to an end, when the Athenians, starved into submission, were forced to accept Sparta's terms of surrender. Shortly afterwards a group of thirty conspirators, with Spartan backing ("the Thirty") , overthrew the democracy and established a narrow oligarchy. Although the oligarchs were in power for only thirteen months, they killed more than 5 percent of the citizenry and terrorized the rest by confiscating the property of some and banishing many others. Despite this brutality, members of the democratic resistance movement that regained control of Athens came to terms with the oligarchs and agreed to an amnesty that protected collaborators from prosecution for all but the most severe crimes. The war and subsequent reconciliation of Athenian society has been a rich field for historians of ancient Greece. From a rhetorical and ideological standpoint, this period is unique because of the extraordinary lengths to which the Athenians went to maintain peace. In Remembering Defeat, Andrew Wolpert claims that the peace was "negotiated and constructed in civic discourse" and not imposed upon the populace. Rather than explaining why the reconciliation was successful, as a way of shedding light on changes in Athenian ideology Wolpert uses public speeches of the early fourth century to consider how the Athenians confronted the troubling memories of defeat and civil war, and how they explained to themselves an agreement that allowed the conspirators and their collaborators to go unpunished. Encompassing rhetorical analysis, trauma studies, and recent scholarship on identity, memory, and law, Wolpert's study sheds new light on a pivotal period in Athens' history.
1 corner lightly bumped else book is fine. DJ has tiny chip near heel of spine. ; Athenians in the classical period (508-322 BC) were drawn to an image of themselves as a compassionate and generous people who rushed to the aid of others in distress, both at home and abroad. What relation does this image bear to actual Athenian behavior? This book argues that Athenians felt little pressure as individuals to help fellow citizens whom they did not know. Democratic ideology called on citizens to refrain from harming one another rather than to engage in mutual support, and emphasized the importance of the helping relationship between citizen and city rather than among individual citizens. If the obligation of Athenians to help fellow citizens was fairly tenuous, all the more so was their responsibility to intervene to assist the peoples of other states; a distinct pragmatism prevailed in the city's decisions concerning intervention abroad. ; 215 pages
