Johann Kaspar Lavater (1741-1801), Swiss theologian and mystic is chiefly remembered for this work on physiognomy. Derived from the works of Giambattista della Porta, this is the art of determining character and personality from facial characteristics and shapes. Einband an den Ecken etwas bestoßen, mit Abrieb an Kanten und Kapitalen. Rückenschildchen mit Fehlstelle im oberen Bereich. Innen einzelne Bleistiftnotate auf Vorsatz, Tafeln zum Teil sehr sorgfältig an den alten Knickstellen hinterlegt, an der rechten Blattkante leicht gerändert und gebräunt, sonst wohlerhalten. Altersentsprechend guter Zustand. Deutsche Ausgabe des französischen Werks "Les expressions des passions de l’âme", hier in der zweiten Auflage aus dem Jahr 1804. Das Buch enthält ein Titelkupfer, ein gestochenes Titelblatt mit Vignette (Diogenes) sowie insgesamt dreizehn Tafeln mit jeweils vier Abbildungen (Kupferstich). Seltenes Werk über allegorische Malerei!

Prima edizione di questo importante trattato sulla fisiognomia umana, utile a fisiologi ed educatori. Niquet (Avignone 1585 - Rouen 1667) studiò a fondo la natura e le passioni dell'uomo, le parti del corpo e loro connessioni con la personalità; trattò inoltre, di cose curiose quali la balbuzie, la voce, lo starnuto, la fame, la sete, il riso, i sogni, e chiromanzia. Legatura in piena pergamena coeva floscia con titolo manoscritto al dorso.
