Tall quarto format measuring 14" tall and 9 1/3" wide. Double-column text printed on extra-fine special paper made at the Pietro Miliani mills at Fabriano cut to slightly different sizes/widths. Lewis Carroll's English translated by Henri Parisot. The author of the lettres collected here Charles Lutwidge Dodgson 27 January 1832 – 14 January 1898 born the third of 11 children but the oldest son is better known as Lewis Carroll the author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland 1865 and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass 1871 written for the children of family friends but he contributed also works devoted to nonsensical verse e.g. The Hunting of the Snark poetry mathematics and obviously photography too Wikipedia. This collection of "lettres" and photographs represents a cull of his photographic oeuvre; the photographs reproduced here are of girls and very young women but one of a boy posed "innocently" such as by standing in a doorway lying down on a couch sitting in a chair posing in profile etc. The lettres and/or photographs are of/to a very large range of children and young women to wit: Dolly Argles Florence Bickersteth Katie Brine Edith Blakemore Sydney Bowles Mary Ellis Nelly Bowman Mary Brown Olive Butler Gertrude Chataway Beatrice Henley Maggie Cunnynghame Elizabeth Lee Hussey Menella Dodgson Carroll's niece Beatrice Earle Xie Kitchin Dymphna Ellis Kathleen Eschwege May Forshall Beatrice Hatch Ethel Hatch Mrs. Hatch Agnes Hughes Amy Hughes Agnes Hull Nelly Knight Edith Jebb Dorothy Joy Lane Pool Alice Pleach Kate Terry Lewis Mrs. Hargreaves Alice Liddell Catherine Lucy Lily MacDonald Grenville N. About a dozen facsimile signatures from the girls in question mostly in scritchy block letters. Complete with a Chronologie a checklist of Lewis Carroll's photographie then a list of Les Petites amies the models and correspondents an essay by Helmut Gernsheim that appears to be about the relationship between Carroll as a photographer and children's book author as regards the fact of nude children a Table des Photos and a Colophon with a small square photograph of Louise D. Barry. Sarah F. Elliott's brief summary of the controversy surrounding Carroll's extensive photography of children girls and young women and his possible or probable attractions thereto concludes that "When he died in 1898 Carroll was a lauded celebrity. But posthumously Carroll’s reputation suffered somewhat as some scholars interpreted his life and work to be tainted with possibly pedophiliac tendencies. These suspicions about Carroll’s true intentions toward young girls began in the 1930s when critics used popular-at-the-time Freudian analysis to deconstruct Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and critique Carroll’s photography. Carroll had been a prolific amateur photographer making approximately 3000 photographs in his lifetime. Just over half of these images are of children and about 30 depict nude or semi-nude children" Sarah K. Elliott's article for Antiques Road Show following an appraisal by Ken Gloss of a First Edition Carroll and a letter to one of the children here. Waggoner writes that "His controversial interest in producing commissioning and collecting sketches and photographs depicting girls in a state of partial dress or fully nude became particularly pronounced in his final decades and is consequently addressed in the last chapter of Waggoner’s study. If images of this nature formed the “logical endpoint for Dodgson’s decades-long undertaking to picture children’s bodies” they also provide a logical endpoint for any work that seeks to reckon honestly with the man behind the camera 185. Elliott concludes that "his legacy remains as foggy as a clouded looking glass." All in a fine exemplar of a fascinating difficult-to-think-about book. There is no child nudity in these photographs whatsoever.Member I.O.B.A. C.B.A. and adherent to the highest ethical standards.
