In his brief letter Congressman Laird informs Spiro Agnew who was then Governor of Maryland that he is enclosing copies of his letter to Republican National Committee Chairman Ray Bliss which he is sending Agnew: "In light of the national publicity which followed my comments and those of other members of the Coordinating Committee during its last meeting". Copies of Laird's 3 page letter to Chairman Bliss are stapled to the letter to the future Vice President. Signed "Mel". Folded for mailing with Agnew's "Recieved" stamp on the verso. Very good together with a retained copy of Spiro Agnew's reply.</p><p>The American politician writer and statesman Melvin Robert Laird 1922-2016 served as a U.S. Congressman from Wisconsin from 1953-1969. He was subsequently appointed as Secretary of Defense by Richard Nixon in 1969. Laird was influential in withdrawing U.S. troops from Vietnam and coined the expression "Vietnamization".</p> Washington, D.C., January 2, 1968.
