1988190318New York: Simon and Schuster 1988. First edition first printing signed limited issue number 460 of 600 copies signed by the author and specially bound. Written in the final years of the Cold War Nixon's book considers the question of what the US could do in the following 11 years to set the foundation for a peaceful and prosperous international order in the 21st century. Nixon maintains the hawkish approach that characterized his own time in the White House. He advocates for continued support of Nicaragua's contras more American cruise missiles in Europe the continuance of covert CIA actions overseas and the establishment of US air bases in Saudi Arabia. He opposes protectionism against Japan and endorses the development of laser-based weapons in space the so-called "Star Wars". Of some note is his assumption that the Soviet Union would still be an existing superpower at the end of the century - he proposes a rapprochement similar to his engagement with China. Octavo. Original blue cloth spine lettered in gilt. With blue cloth slipcase. Light rubbing to spine and slipcase extremities: a near-fine copy. hardcover
