1857173408London: Bell & Daldy 1857. First edition. This is Nixon's account of his cruise through the Bass Strait during which he stayed with Aboriginal communities and examined how they lived from their haircuts to "the native potato so called by the colonists though never tasted by them and having not the most remote relation to the plant of that name except in a little resemblance of the tubers in shape and appearance to the kidney potato" p. 27. Francis Russell Nixon 1803-1879 was the first Bishop of Tasmania who embarked on his 1854 expedition to help the recently immigrated families who had little access to the church due to the remoteness of the area. During his two-month trip he established a chapel in Launceston which developed into a thriving congregation by his departure. Nixon served as bishop during a confusing period as for close to a decade of his tenure the island was still receiving thousands of convicts annually. He did not enjoy his posting with his superiors having a poor opinion of his work and so he relished personal endeavours more than his ministerial role being an "accomplished musician and artist" ODNB. Octavo. Engraved frontispiece with paper guard 8 similar plates engraved title page 22 pp. of advertisements dated June 1857 to rear. Original blue morocco-grain cloth spine ruled in blind spine and front cover lettered in gilt covers panelled in blind yellow coated endpapers edges untrimmed. Ownership inscription of a "C. Sparks 1857" to front free endpaper verso. Cloth with marks extremities bumped spine and head of boards toned plates clean and bright. A very good copy. hardcover
