Mai 1687 zu Coblitz im Magdeburgischen besuchte die Waisenhausschule und von 1704 an die Universität in Halle studirte 2 Jahre lang Medicin dann Philosophie und Theologie und wurde 1708 Lehrer am dortigen Pädagogium. Nachdem er 1715 mit Friedrich Hoffmann bekannt geworden war entschloss er sich von Neuem zum Studium der Medicin indem er 1717 mit der Diss.: "De athletis veterum eorum diaeta et habitu" zum Doctor promovirt wurde. Das innige Verhältniss zu Hoffmann dauerte bis zu dessen Tode fort. Schulze fing bald nach seiner Promotion an Vorlesungen zu halten und wurde 1720 bei Heister's Abgange nach Altdorf als Professor der Beredsamkeit und der Archäologie berufen und blieb diesem Amte bis zu seinem Tode 10. Oct. 1744. Zu seinem Andenken wurde eine Medaille geschlagen. - Er war ein Polyhistor im edelsten -sinne des Wortes der erste wahre Geschichtsschreiber der Medizin als Theologie Orientalist Geschichtsschreiber Numismatiker und Arzt gleich ausgezeichnet jedoch sind seine Verdienste um die Geschcihte der Medizin am hervorragendsten und bleibendsten. Leider ist seine "Historia medicinae a rerum iniitiis ad A.U.R. 535 deducta" Leipzig 1728 nicht wie er es beabsichtigt hatte bis über die Verpflanzung der Medicin nach Rom zur Zeit Archagathus fortgeführt worden; nur ein gedrängtes Augusti secessum Halle 1741 und "Dissertationum academ. ad medicinam ejusque historiam pertinentium fasc. 1" ib. 1743 folgten noch. Seine übrigen Schriften sind grösstentheils lateinische Programme und Dissertationen über sehr verschiedene Gegenstände." Gurlt. Hirsch V p.308 unknown

An excellent copy in the original binding of sheep-backed marbled boards with vellum tips but the binding now very worn with the covers barely holding. Manuscript price "3s." on upper cover. First edition several times reprinted in the eighteenth century and still regularly performed. This may be Galliard’s most enduring composition and although he was eclipsed by Handel especially this work has a distinguished aristocratic subscribers’ list including many women showing how popular he was in his own time. This work examines Judaism Islam Samaritanism as well as Chinese Hindu and Mongolian beliefs uniquely incorporating references to indigenous American and Mexican religions. Hoffmann describes these American beliefs as “shadowed†reflections of divine truth presenting them through a distinctly Lutheran lens.<br /> <p><p><br /> The text with its Samaritan title Ṭelal be-nahar "shadow in light" features a diverse set of typefaces—Arabic Hebrew and Greek—and includes exotic woodcut inserts a folding plate and text illustrations of various coins. The larger illustrations depict figures such as a flaming bronze idol of Moloch associated with ancient child sacrifice along with artifacts from Gerhard’s collection including a Hindu Bhairava statuette and an Indonesian shadow puppet. Notably Hoffmann mistakenly labels this statuette as a "Chinese idol" underscoring the era’s limited understanding of Asian religions.<br /> <p><p><br /> While many images are borrowed from Athanasius Kircher’s Oedipus Ægyptiacus others directly depict Gerhard’s artifacts like the Bhairava statuette a fierce incarnation of Shiva obtained through the Dutch East India Company by Johann Schelhammer a Lutheran pastor in The Hague.<br /> <p><p><br /> These visual and textual elements combined with Hoffmann’s commentary on Mexican religious practices and a depiction of Huitzilopochtli—the Aztec god of war and the sun symbolizing protection and sacrifice—create a vivid portrayal of 17th-century efforts to interpret global religions within a Christian framework. Johann Ernst Wichmann 1740-1802 "einer der ausgezeichnetsten und berühmtesten deutschen Aerzte in der 1. Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts geb. 10. Mai 1740 in Hannover studirte seit 1759 in Göttingen besonders unter BRENDEL VOGEL und ROEDERER promovirte 1762 mit der Diss. "De insigni venenorum quorundarn virtute medica imprimisque cantharidum ad morsum animalium rabidorum praestantia" und liess sich darauf in seiner Vaterstadt nieder. Im folgenden Jahre machte er wissenschaftliche Reisen nach Frankreich und England mit längerem Aufenthalte in London. Hier wurde er ein gründlicher Kenner der englischen Medicin deren Grundsätze er zuerst in Deutschland verbreitet hat. 1764 kehrte er nach Hannover zurück beschäftigte sich schriftstellerisch namentlich mit Uebersetzung verschiedener englischer medicinischer Werke in's Deutsche gewann die Achtung und Freundschaft WERLHOF'S wurde Armen- und Waisenhausarzt und erlangte nach dem Tode des Letztgenannten zugleich mit der Stellung als zweiter Leibarzt eine sehr bedeutende Praxis. 1770 veröffentlichte er die höchst schätzenswerthe Abhandlung: "Beytrag zur Geschichte der Kriebelkrankheit im Jahre 1770" Leipz. 1771 1775 veranstaltete er eine Ausgabe der Werke WERLHOF'S. Auch war er mit ZIMMERMANN dem 1. kgl. hannov. Leibarzte intim befreundet. Aus Gram über den Verlust seiner Frau starb Wichmann erst 62 Jahre alt 12. Juni 1802. Von seinen Schriften ist die werthvollste die über Diagnostik in der sich nicht bloss vortreflliche Bemerkungen über Diagnose der Krankheiten von der Wichmann trotz seiner Schwerhörigkeit ein Meister war sondern auch eine höchst rationelle vorzugsweise auf geeignetem diätetisches Verhalten und der Anwendung nur einfacher aber erprobter Heilmittel herrührende Therapie findet. Die betreffende Schrift ist betitelt: "Ideen zur Diagnostik" 3 Bde. Hannover 1794-1802; Wien 1798.
