This is an excellent and early news paper report on Japan. . The text continues from a previous page not included. The balance of the text covers Nagasaki and the 'striking contrast to everything Chinese.' With half page illustration of "THE BAY OF NAGASAKI JAPAN" Showing Deshima Island home of the Dutch Factory. . With article titles: CUSTOMS OF THE JAPANESE-EAGER FOR KNOWLEDGE; JAPANESE PALACES; THE TREATY WITH JAPAN; THE LORD MAYOR'S COACH. . This fine example shows the revered Mt. Fuji in a foreign- drawn representation of the fabled mountains. Also below that is an excellent bird's-view of Nagasaki and Deshima with several foreign ships at anchor. . The treaty mentioned in the text covers the opening of Japan to the British in the next year on the first of July 1859 some 6 years after the American Commodore Perry opened Japan to America in 1854. .
