A fine framed copy of the original actual advertisement NOT a contemporary digital copy print of the author appearing on behalf of U. S. News And World Report signed by Truman Capote. The advertisement is "blow-up" oversize at 10 X 14 inches. Elegantly and beautifully framed in black matte finish increasing the overall size slightly. Features the author in a closeup portrait-photograph taken by Irving Penn: A pensive-looking Truman Capote post-"In Cold Blood" triumph at the liminal height of both his global renown and impending personal disaster. Although the photographer is not acknowledged Capote himself mentions him in "Conversations With American Writers" and is one of several portraits taken by Irving Penn the only other major artist to photograph him extensively aside from Avedon. There is very minimal text printed at the bottom. As such it is eminently suitable for display. Printed on archival stock paper in the United States. The reproduction quality is exemplary in every respect: It has lost almost none of its original sepia-toned clarity and warmth when it first appeared. Without DJ as issued. Presents "Truman Capote: U. S. New And World Report Advertisement". Marks the very first appearance of Truman Capote on behalf of the legendary publication. The text underneath Capote's vast portrait simply states: "We spare our readers unimportant news. We spare our advertisers unimportant readers". Meaning the publication and Capote matter as serious subjects. Furthermore that Truman Capote is an important reader himself worth reaching by advertisers. For all of his private and public troubles Truman Capote mattered throughout his literary and public life - and posthumously too. ALL of his books not just "In Cold Blood" are in innumerable subsequent printings and have remained in print uninterruptedly. This is surely and mainly because "In Cold Blood" is the most important and influential book of its kind ever written in the 20th century. Capote himself called it the "first nonfiction novel". Norman Mailer on the one hand and Joan Didion on the other emulated its ground-breaking techniques to write their own masterpieces. An absolute "must-have" collectible not just memorabilia piece for Truman Capote collectors. This copy of the U. S. News And World Report Advertisement is very prominently neatly and beautifully signed in blue fountain pen on recto underneath his portrait by Truman Capote. It is signed directly on the advertisement itself not on a tipped-in page or bookplate. This piece is a collectible classic. As far as we know this is the only such signed copy of it beautifully framed available online and is in remarkably well-preserved condition: Clean crisp and bright. Please note: Keep in mind that this is ephemera therefore most if not all other copies vanished a long time ago. It is the only signed copy we have ever found and will ever find. A rare one-of-a-kind signed copy thus. Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood" is regarded by Harold Bloom as the author's canonical masterpiece. One of the greatest writers of the 20th century. Quarto each number comprising 8 pages with illustrations mainly from photographs. Plain binder's cloth a little marked flecked and rubbed at the extremities with the rear cover heavily mottled; endpapers foxed; light tidemark to the bottom corner of three numbers the first two and the last one; trifling signs of use; a very good run. Published during the editorship of Frederick Usher 1931-1943 'The Mercury House News' was 'published monthly by and in the interests of the employees of Davies Brothers'. In the first number the Managing Director C.B. Davies writes that 'There is no reason why this little sheet should not be a means of improving the mutual understanding between employer and employee thereby creating a feeling of confidence and attaining the good fellowship and co-operation between the departments of the whole organisation of Davies Brothers Limited'. The end result is the desired 'blend of humour in general items' with departmental reports that are 'a serious record of the events of the month - improved plant promotions social items sporting news and the like'. However Number 14 is the 'Last Issue. Owing to the regrettable decision of the piece-workers of the Linotype Chapel "that they will not set the matter for HOUSE NEWS unless payment is made for same" and as the publication is entirely a voluntary effort on the part of all employees in which considerable interest has been taken and pleasure derived it is regretted that the publication will cease with this issue'. We thought complete runs of this in-house journal would be scarce but we were very surprised to find no record of any issues at all in Trove. Davies Brothers Limited hardcover

The Record Reign - Queen Victoria & Queen Elizabeth II.

Folio. 2 vols bound in red cloth all edges gilt presented in a red clothbound slipcase; pp.68; pp. 54 8 profusely illustrated throughout using a bespoke printing process to replicate the original chromolithography printed on specialist premium quality paper to accurately recreate the feel of the original; new.Published to celebrate the Queen's 90th birthday whilst simultaneously acknowledging her becoming the longest reigning monarch since her great-great grandmother Queen Victoria. The Queen herself in the leadup to the celebrations had made it clear that she did not want to encourage festivity concerning her tenure out of deference to her ancestor. It was obvious therefore that when the palace became aware of the intent to produce this set the publication should strike the right tone. ILN did some research and uncovered the lavish Record Number for a Record Reign published by ILN in 1897 to celebrate Queen Victoria's longevity and Diamond Jubilee. A proposal was put to the Palace that a dual set might be published containing a reproduction of the Record Number for a Record Reign and also including a The Record Reign of Her Majesty The Queen. The two volume set would mark the reigns of both monarchs side by side. This met with approval and the project was begun in earnest. With the support and guidance of The Royal Warrant Holder's Association ILN commissioned an original portrait of the Queen painted by Alistair Barford selected the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust artists. In addition a new portrait of Queen Victoria was produced by ILN staff artist Amedee Forestier. Further images for the book were sourced primarily from the archives of The Illustrated London News and the Great Eight publications with later images 1994 onwards sourced externally.Physical production of the books was a challenge as the original printing methods for A Record Number. used a combination of inks and colours that are difficult to replicate using the standard 4 colour ink method. A bespoke printing curve with a wider colour gamut was used. Further to avoid the use of coating which undermines colour vibrancy hard drying inks were employed. In some cases a 5th colour was used to augment the image further. Both volumes contain a wealth of information on royal history associations and cultural context. A few examples from The Record Reign of Her Majesty the Queen are highlighted below: - A foreword by the Prime Minister David Cameron summarising the great changes and accomplishments under Elizabeth II.- The Queen as Stateswoman - An analysis of the Queen as a stateswoman; her education in the act of ruling gives parliament authority but abides by its decisions and remains politically neutral her interactions with prime ministers her neutral political stance during troubled times and position as Defender of the Faith.- Elizabethan age of Technology - A brief study of technological innovations 1952 to present starting with the internationally televised coronation event to an estimated 20 million people moving through the discovery of DNA structure the Festival of Britain architectural advances the Gherkin and into recent days with the monarchy twitter account. hardcover
