In 1863 the Daimyo of Choshu Mori Motonori in June & July of 1863 ordered his people to fire on the American British Dutch and French vessels that passed through the channel. . As a consequence of this act of hostility Shimonoseki was bombarded by the Western powers. . This group of early original newspaper reports illustrate some historic views covers the action on both sides and also discusses the penalty paid by Japan to the foreign powers for this act. . The British were paid an indemnity for their lost sailors & marines in the battle. This is nicely documented herein. . Very nice group of very good illustrations and useful text. . R A R E This excellent full sheet work show two different views each the full width of the double sheet: 51.5 cm. The first is 16.3 cm. tall the 2nd is 12.5 cm. tall. The first shows a panoramic of two American flags flying over the U.S. Consulate at Yokohama along the quay with several sloops at anchor in the bay most of which are English. The second is a panoramic view of the great city of Jeddo Tokyo. With accompanying articles below: SCENES IN JAPAN-THE CITY OF JEDDO AND THE BRITISH FLEET AT YOKOHAMA. The article discuss the British squadron held in readiness for the Shimonoseki affair to assist Sir Rutherford Alcock. The woodcut is after a photograph by celebrated early photographer of Japan Felice Beato. A second article discusses the Taeping War in China. 1852101423Folio 16" x 11 1/2" laminated mint green colored boards illustrated. Top cover detached spine somewhat bent and cracked chips and wear at extremities one or two signatures a little loose small bookplate on front pastedown a bit of foxing some browning and aging not collated but issues appear complete. This is a collection of the Illustrated London News that was probably used to promote subscriptions. The date on the tile page indicates 1852 but the actual issues seem to run from March 30 1844 to November 30 1844. This volume contains over 20 issues. While some issues may say reprint these reprints were done around 1852 for what appears some promotional effort. This volume contains some of the earlier issues of this publication which began in May 1842. It contains some interesting news and illustrations including a short story and illustration of a copper balloon for flying in Paris March 30 1844 the London Stock Exchange April 13 1844 an article and illustrations on Emigration to Sydney April 13 1844 a visit from the King of France June 1 1844 and an article on currency and income taxes June 1 1844.
