The White House News Photographers Association is dedicated to promoting protecting and advancing the interests and intellectual property rights of its members which still consists of still and video photographers assigned to cover the White House and other news events in Washington and beyond. The Association strongly believes in the public's natural and legal right to freedom in searching for the truth and the right to be accurately and completely informed about the world in which we live. They believe that there is a direct linkage between the survival of a democratic society and an accurate and free press. Members of the WHNPA maintain the highest standards of ethical conduct in serving the public interest which includes truth accuracy and fairness. Our images strive to be objective and independent. The White House News Photographers Association holds quarterly membership meetings to benefit our members. Topics include grant winners showing their work new product demonstrations by our sponsors and panel discussions to educate the wider community. The Eyes of History showcases the work of the nation's most distinguished photojournalists. From Ground Zero to the Pentagon the War in Afghanistan Anthrax Gary Condit Barry Bonds Hillary Rodham Clinton and Michael Jordan these images capture raw emotions of rage and despair hope and renewal experienced in 2001 an unforgettable year. The photographs were selected from the White House News Photographers' Association annual contest Eyes of History which names a photographer of the year and recognizes the work of leading still and video photojournalists. "These photographs are incredibly powerful. They tell stories for people and events that have made an lasting impression on the world" says Corcoran President and Director David C. Levy. "The Corcoran is honored to exhibit these memorials to history. Every American should see this exhibition because they provide a deeper context of last year's events and show the ultimate will of Americans to persevere and succeed." Susan Walsh president of WHNPA agrees: "The images created by our members are an amazing visual record of the past year. We have seen many changes in photojournalism during the 81 years of the WHNPA. This year in the stills category 112 awards were presented including "Photographer of the Year" awarded to Stephen Crowley of the New York Times for his dramatic and diverse portfolio that includes a pictorial essay on the people of Afghanistan and the day in the life of President Bush. "Political Photo of the Year" awarded to Doug Mills of the Associated Press for his photo of White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card informing President Bush of the attack on the World Trade Center.
