R A R E This excellent full sheet work show two different views each the full width of the double sheet: 51.5 cm. The first is 16.3 cm. tall the 2nd is 12.5 cm. tall. The first shows a panoramic of two American flags flying over the U.S. Consulate at Yokohama along the quay with several sloops at anchor in the bay most of which are English. The second is a panoramic view of the great city of Jeddo Tokyo. With accompanying articles below: SCENES IN JAPAN-THE CITY OF JEDDO AND THE BRITISH FLEET AT YOKOHAMA. The article discuss the British squadron held in readiness for the Shimonoseki affair to assist Sir Rutherford Alcock. The woodcut is after a photograph by celebrated early photographer of Japan Felice Beato. A second article discusses the Taeping War in China. The upper illustration shows a group of Chinese lined up to receive a catty of dry rice. According to the text some 700 to 800 people line up three times a week for rice. The sket- ch shows a few of the 599 blind alone who lined up. The 2nd. shows a street procession of a thief being beaten with the gong man leading the wayi. His queue was cut off a form of chastisement and the rattan cane ! unknown

He was the ILN artist who provided many sketches of Formosa. He also went on an excursion with tow other English friends to Bankimsing a Pepuhuan village near a Spanish missionary home. First view shows 12 Chinese farmers both men & women engaged in ploughing watering harvesting and tending the fields while several children play. One carries what looks like a lunch on a bamboo shoulder pole with two baskets. The 2nd illustration is of the interior of a upperclass Chinese home with the father seated smoking a cigarette with a servant just leaving after delivering a bottle of wine and two cups. This set was written and drawn covering the early activities of Englishman Edmund H. Grimani who resided for several months at Takao he was I.L.N's resident artist and reporter. . These woodcut prints documents his travel & journey around Formosa along with some of his British colleagues who rode horses and supported by a number of local coolies who carrie their supplies. . They were charged by a water-buffalo along with local coolies struggled up & down steep mountains aborigine Formosan natives try on Englishmen's clothes and hat other natives check the muscles of these foreigners! . Fording great and powerful rivers visit to Pephuan village of Bankimsing near a Spanish missionary home. Some of the caption tiles are: "A Hazardous Descent; Pursed by Water-Buffaloes; Arrival & Farwell at Bankimsing; In a Bamboo Forest; Halt on the Road; Welcome by an old Chinese Friend; Flight of Savage Chief and his tribe; Crossing the Lagoon in Gale; Tumbling in the Quicksand; Canoeing at Takow fort; .
