This book began as a collaboration between the Swiss artists and friends Alberto Giacometti and Herbert Matter. In the 1960's Matter first began to photograph Giacometti's sculptures in Paris. He continued doing this for years and both men looked forward to publication of this material. Matter continued working on it until his death in 1984. It finally happened a few years later, brought to fruition by Mercedes Matter. This book has a minimal text. It is mainly a record of Matter's photographs of Giacomettl's sculptures, which Giacometti himself said made him aware of qualities his sculptures possessed that he was unaware of.
