This is an almost very good hardcover copy without dust jacket as issued. Text in French. This is an unusual copy. The book was issued in a limited edition of 600 copies. The colophon states this copy is 'Examplaire d'auteur', this is handwritten. The book has also been signed by the author, Antoine Schnapper, in ink on the front endpaper, and inscribed to a prominent art historian, a specialist in 17th and 18th century European painting and drawing, at the Institute of Fine Arts in New York. The author has also inscribed his card as well, this laid in. The art historian's bookplate affixed to the same endpaper. This copy is furthur unusual, as the American art historian has annotated the text with a number of pencil underlinings and marks. (All of this in light pencil and could be removed). The front cover has a spot of stain, the size of a quarter, lighter than the yellow boards. Also a small tan stain to the inside top edge of the front board.
