Born in Russia, Pailes went to Paris at the age of 22. After years of struggle, he achieved success. His original training as a sculptor can be discerned in his work. At the age of 15 he studied lithography in Odessa and later attended art academies in Germany, France, Italy and Switzerland. After migrating to America in 1904 he became a multifaceted artist and produced etchings, paintings, water colors and even cartoons.
