Supposed involvement with the Boss Tweed Ring ruined his political career; Hoffman was the last to-date Mayor of NY City also elected as Governor of the state. Counter-signed by the city comptroller and by Brown on the back of the check. Approx. 3 3/4" x 8" size; including a nice bit of job-printing: a good woodcut vignette and ornate corner ornaments around the edges printed in blue tones by A. Brown & Co. Nassau Street.
