Two splendid panoramic views of Lake Como and Lake Maggiore.<br/> <br/>Catering to the foreigners flocking to the region on The Grand Tour this pair of hand-painted prints beautifully depict the famed picturesque lakes with rich bands of blue highlighting the water and sky with the surrounding hills and mountains dotted with luxurious villas. In the view of Lake Maggiore we see from a very high vantage point the Borromean Islands: Isola Bella Isola Madre and Isola dei Pescatoriwith their extraordinary gardens. The view of Lake Como looks north up the lake towards Switzerland from above Bellagio which occupies the point at which the lake divides in two. The paintings are clearly intended as a pair the images being almost identical in size with matching black painted margins. 18092221587<p>RARE MIDSHIPMAN APPOINTMENT</p><p>"Th: Jefferson" Partly-printed vellum DS as president 1 page 10" x 10 1/2" January 16 1809. President Jefferson issues a naval appointment for Henry Pilliam. In part: "That reposing special Trust and Confidence in the Patriotism Valour Fidelity and Abilities of Henry Pilliam I do appoint him a midshipman in the Navy of the United States." Neatly signed at the conclusion by President Jefferson and countersigned by Secretary pf the Navy Robert Smith. The document bears an embossed Navy Department seal to the upper left. Intersecting folds overall wrinkling and light staining otherwise fine condition. Such appointments by Thomas Jefferson are quite scarce as he and the Republican party opposed a strong navy. However as Jefferson's term neared its conclusion the naval forces were beginning to grow out of necessity in order to protect the maritime interests of the United States as merchant vessels were  frequently being interfered with during their voyages on the high seas. Ultimately these disputes would culminate in the War of 1812 during President Madison's administration. A desirable and well-preserved example of a Jefferson appointment. Very good.</p> unknown books

Contemporary green morocco spine gilt lettered all edges gilt. Boards a bit scuffed edges somewhat worn spine faded. Occasional faint foxing.<br/> <br/>A lovely album of botanical watercolours.<br/> <br/>An exceptional album of fifteen botanical watercolors which are accompanied by an expertly accomplished manuscript description within blue and gilt borders. Each image depicts a different class of plant life while the text describes families of plants within that class. The images range from agarics mushrooms to ornate roses and camellias and include watercolors of honeysuckle blueberries azalias oaks and marvels-of-peru. Every text leaf contains a detailed analysis of the different families of the depicted plant in a neat and legible French hand. A beautiful example of an amateur artist's book of botanical scholarship. unknown books
1810WRCLIT67042Japan 1810. Folio 33 x 27.5 cm. Late 19th or early 20th century marbled calf raised bands spine gilt extra gilt label a.e.g. with watercolor river scenes on paper onlaid as doublures. Binding extremities rubbed images offset a bit to interleaves occasional patches of darkening to backgrounds of a few images one corner of an interleaf creased and a bit torn but otherwise very good to near fine. A lovely collection of watercolor images on silk of birds moths and butterflies the artist unknown but the paintings executed with great skill. The twenty-two individual panels vary somewhat in size but approximate 24 x 20 cm to 20 x 16cm and each includes several specimens: in the case of the birds 2-4 in the case of the Lepidoptera 5-10. The individual panels are mounted to heavy stock via blue silk bordering. The birds are identified via manuscript captions next to each bird; the Lepidoptera are not captioned. A pencil note on the free endsheet in an early hand dates the paintings somewhat earlier 1700-1750 Shijo School than do those later in its most recent provenance: tipped in unidentified mid-20th century auction description dating the paintings to early 19th century - private collection. hardcover books

Read became Justice of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania in 1858 and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania in 1872. Read gained an international reputation for the depth of his knowledge eloquence and masterly arguments in the courtroom. Active in politics Read was an early supporter and organizer of the Republican Party. This portrait belonged to the Philadelphia Bar Association. Founded in 1802 it is the oldest association of lawyers in the United States. Its library where this portrait was last displayed was renamed the Theodore F. 18306526London 1830. Aquatints coloured by hand. A fine complete series of four anonymous prints of hunting scenes possibly after the Alkens.<br/> <br/>The style and naming of these prints suggests an Alken origin for the series. Siltzer records a number of series by the Alken family in which the first plate is titled "Unkennelling." This title appears to be unique to them and supports the supposition that the present series are after the Alkens. Henry Thomas Alken was born into what became an artistic dynasty. He studied under the miniature painter J. T. Barber and exhibited his first picture a miniature portrait at the Royal Academy when he was sixteen. From about 1816 onwards he "produced an unending stream of paintings drawings and engravings of every type of field and other sporting activity. He is best remembered for his hunting prints many of which he engraved himself until the late 1830s.To many sporting art is "Alken" and to describe his work or ability is quite unnecessary." 185528465Susquehanna Depot 1855. Pencil pen and ink. Signed in ink: "Theodore Krausch. Susquehana sic Depot. N.Y. and Erie Railroad. October 13 1855." A very handsome drawing of a locomotive by a prominent inventor and engineer.<br/> <br/>Theodore Krausch dates unknown was employed by what was then known as the New York and Erie Railroad at Susquehanna Depot where railway cars and locomotives were designed built and repaired. The town in northeastern Pennsylvania just below the New York border and Binghamton came into existence with the coming of the railroad. Krausch who obtained several patents during his life one for innovations in railway chair design also received a Silver Medal from the American Institute of the City of New York for a drawing of a locomotive no doubt similar to this one. During the 1850s when railway lines and companies were spreading out across the country each railroad customized its engines and cars to its specific needs. There was a large degree of standardization and this Krausch drawing is a perfect rendition of the 4-4-0 wheel arrangement and overall design that was used almost universally in 19th century America. unknown books

1885WRCLIT66997New York & London: G.P. Putnam's Sons 1885. Quarto. Publisher's mauve cloth heavily decorated in gilt and blind untrimmed. Plates and illustrations. Minor speckling to the cloth sizing at the extreme foretips some foxing early and late and occasionally to a few margins of plates institutional bookplate on pastedown otherwise about fine and bright in faintly hand-smudged printed dust jacket with some offsetting to the lower panel from the rather battered publisher's box. The "Zuyder-Zee Edition" limited to 600 numbered copies of which this is one of 250 copies on untrimmed Linen paper. However this copy is at variance with the colophon in that it is accompanied by the extra suite of ten mounted etchings specially printed on satin that was to accompany the first 25 copies rather than the two sets of ordinary impressions associated with this middle issue. The corners of the mats are a bit bumped and worn and one of the etchings is a bit foxed otherwise the suite is in very good order in the chipped remnants of the original printed paper wrapper also bearing a bookplate. This deluxe edition features original etchings some in Japon proof state by and photogravures after the likes of Pennell Gifford Vanderhoof Colman et al. The jacket is not among those selected examples of 19th century jackets cited by Tanselle. G.P. Putnam's Sons hardcover books

To Gideon Welles: In part: ". . .I have been solicited to appoint commissioners to the convention which is to be held in Washington on the 4th inst but have not done so. . .I have received no intimation from Virginia that a representation from Conn. is desired except what I have seen in the newspapers. I telegraphed you this noon inquiring your views but as I have received no reply. . ." Welles 1802-1878 born July 1 1802; died February 11 1878; was the United States Secretary of the Navy from 1861 to 1869 under Lincoln and Johnson. A proposed convention of all states to try and adjust differences between the north and the south. Seven states had declared their secession from the Union and established the Confederated States of America on February 4 1861 the day before this letter was written.</p> unknown books
1870List1032Jefferson City: S. Winans Photographer 1870. Carte-de-visite photographs measuring 3 ¾ x 2 ¼ on slightly larger mounts versos with the decorative stamp of S. Winans photographer 126 High St. Jefferson City. Some fading to images else about fine quite well preserved near fine overall. Near Fine. The Lincoln Institute of Jefferson City Missouri had its roots in the educational programs set up for soldiers of the 62nd Colored Regiment during the Civil War most of whom were from Missouri. After the war with $6000 raised from donations a group led by the white abolitionist officer Richard Foster set up the Lincoln Institute in Jefferson City. The student body was entirely African-american with the faculty a mix of African-American and white. The state of Missouri provided additional funding. <br /> <br /> Collected here are four portraits of students of the institute likely taken in the founding decade before the carte-de-visite format was replaced by the cabinet card. The photographer S. Winans took the photographs likely in his Jefferson City gallery as they are all staged in a formal portrait gallery. Winans also took a well known portrait of David W. Wallace the father of Bess Wallace Truman. Quite uncommon - we find no other record of these images elsewhere. S. Winans, Photographer unknown books

Diagonal vista: The ships Anahuac Lucy S. Wills and Anna Decatur load ice at the Tudor Wharves Charlestown Massachusetts. The first two ships were East Boston-built and Boston-registered; the latter was built and registered in Portsmouth New Hampshire. Charlestown Bridge is in the foreground with one lone spectator observing the shipyard docks. Frederick Tudor known as "The Ice King" combined two trades without much apparent connection ice and sawdust and by using the sawdust for insulation was able to create a shipping industry in New England that reached the far East and South America. Handwritten notebook with 16 additional daily accounts using "Lake Austin Woolen Mill" letterhead for this cheese factories daily tally. Ledger describes what seems to be a cheese co-op with dividends divided per day report of the season most milk received in one day June 16th - 9195 gallons days cheese was made per year 207 etc. Wells VT rests on the edge of Rutland county and in 1870 the populations total was 430 people. In the early 1800's a dam was built on Lake St. Catherine which enabled industry such as a woolen mill wood working shop and cheese factory to thrive. Covers worn joints cracked but holding 2 cm. loss of leather to tail of spine. <br/><br/> hardcover books

New York Hospital's pharmacopoeia was published in 1816 four years before the publication of the United States Pharmacopoeia. This caused considerable concern among the attending physicians about the potential abridgement of the physician's right to prescribe." from: New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell site Dr. James Rushmore Wood 1816 -1882 "began the practice of medicine in his native city and in 1847 he became a member of the medical board of Bellevue hospital New York. At that time this institution was a receptacle for lunatics paupers criminals and other victims of a depraved life. The most rudimentary hygienic laws were grossly violated in its management and the nursing was inefficient and untrustworthy. With the assistance of Morris Franklin president of the board of aldermen Dr. Wood set about reforming this state of things and labored so successfully that he soon reduced the annual death-rate by 600. Commercial portraits and images of European theatre performers with the plate number and date in the plate. Some show good humor -- a classroom of children being taught by a dog men drinking a woman peering through a tennis racket and the like. Portfolio soiled and worn. Parker Scammon is an officer with the United Army Corps of Topographic Engineers. Parker would later command the 23rd Ohio Regiment during the Civil War. <br /> <br />Good Friday Morn. 1846 <br /> <br />My Dearest brother <br /> <br />Parker fully intended to cover this envelope to you but as he was about doing it the Quartermaster must needs send for him to come to the Library for some important briefings: and so he begs me to write for him and apologize to the best of my ability for the non-appearance of your beer. You must have thought him very neglectful and tho' it is rather an awkward task I will tell you the whole truth. If you will have patience to wait till the end of this month it shall then be forthcoming. He expected to order it on the 1st but our cook took it into his head to go back to the city to live and as we had at his own request kept back the quarter part of his wages for 18 months you must know our last month's pay went with a rush and as we are so involved on every side we wont borrow and therefore all parties ourselves included must wait till after another visit from the Paymaster for our good beer. I have thus most frankly stated to you the case and I hope you will excuse it. We remember that we are still considerably in your debt so that it is with great pleasure that P. will attend to your order just so soon as circumstances will permit. I think the value of the empty half barrels returned is $1.50 each and they quite well have them as money. We know the merchant her brother worked for Homer Foote had become a very wealthy retailer in Springfield and assume that John B. was successful as well. <br />Letter has some foxing and tears in areas where there is creasing.
