The collection includes over 150 dated and signed letters written to and a few items from Dr. Lucinda DeLeftwich Templin 1888-1969 author historian & collector ".one of El Paso's best-loved and most distinguished educators - in 1916 she took her undergraduate and Master's at U. of Missouri and became Dean of Lindenwood College in St. Charles MO. did doctoral work at Harvard and Columbia and took over as principal at the Radford School in 1927 at the time called El Paso School for Girls; Dr. Templin interested Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Radford of Webster Grove Mo. in the school and the Radfords paid off the mortgage provided an endowment fund that insured the institution's stability and the name of the school was changed in honor of these benefactors. During Dr. Templin's administration Radford School grew to a nationally accredited school for girls in the Southwest and when she retired in 1967 the 22-acre campus had more than $1000000 in physical improvements and was debt-free. Dr. Templin had also completed plans for construction of a $400000 library and museum on property owned by the school; she was a member of the nation's leading educational organizations and honorary societies named consistently to Who's Who in America and Who's Who in American Education; author of numerous publications most of which were concerned with the field of education. The above material from her obituary; This wide-ranging diverse collection has three intertwining themes - letters concerning Dr. Templin's ongoing interest in education and educational materials for her school letters which relate to the business and academic part of Radford and letters of reference for applicants and correspondence which relates to the creation of her War Museum where she collected military autographs uniforms photographs paraphernalia weapons from around the world. 1907403892Cincinnati: Johnson & Hardin for the Author 1907. 8vo. 252 pp. Frontispiece portrait of the author 57 plates. Original grey cloth blocked in red on front cover lettered on spine. A very good copy hinges cracked light wear at extremities. As-issued without jacket. SCARCE FIRST EDITION one of 500 copies of the "Subscriber's Edition" this copy out-of-series. Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "To my friend Henry Taylor Birch Captain of Antioch College Base Ball Team 1867-8 from Alfred K. Nippert Cincinnati O Oct 17th 1937." Birch was the pitcher in the historic first game between the Cincinnati Red Stockings and Antioch College. He later became a prominent Chicago attorney and philanthropist. A public park in Ft. Lauderdale FL bears his name and he donated paintings to the Art Institute of Chicago. Nippert was one of the most prominent judges in Cincinnati his wife was Maud Bamble Nippert heir to the Proctor & Gamble Company. Nippert traveled to Germany in 1916 with an unofficial message from President Wilson: he met with Kaiser Wilhelm stating that while Wilson did not doubt the sincerity of the German leaders he felt he had the support of the American people in his controversy with the Germans over submarine warfare. "In 1869 when the Cincinnati Red Stockings began their inaugural season as history's first professional baseball team they played a preseason game at the site of what is now the Grand Union Terminal in Cincinnati against the Antiochs who were regarded as one of the finest amateur clubs in Ohio. The game was played on May 15 1869 and Cincinnati defeated Antioch 41-7. Antioch had been scheduled to host the first game of this professional tour on May 31 1869 but pouring rain and an unplayable field kept the teams off the diamond. So while Antioch was not a part of the first professional baseball game the college does hold claim to hosting the first ever rainout in professional baseball" Guschov Stephen D. The Red Stockings of Cincinnati: Base Ball's First All-Professional Team and its Historic 1869 and 1870 Seasons Jefferson NC.: McFarland & Co. 1998 p. 45. Ellard writes of the game with Antioch on page 154 though he gets the details wrong see Dan Hotaling "The Antioch Connection The First Professional Game". Ellard's father had been a founding member of the Red Stockings often cited as the first professional club. Most of the book is dedicated to the Red Stockings of 1866-1870 which went undefeated for 1869 and much of 1870. White Motor Vehicle Research Company - designers of exotic cars in the Boston MA area. We have not discovered any further information about the A. J. White Research Company thus far nor about the artist R.S.W. of this particular drawing. There does not appear to be any connection to the great White truck manufacturer. The drawing itself is especially nice its cool red sportscar positioned diagonally between two details in blue in a way that makes it appear anxious to move. unknown books

Our research indicates this piece was accomplished circa 1922 the catalog raisonne giving it the title 'Dreaming'. There is a pencil title written at bottom left "The Evening" as well. Reverse with a small "Made in France" oval sticker. The art approx 210 x 155 mm approx. 8 1/4" x 6 1/4" size; the overall sheet size is approx. 390 x 270 mm 10 1/2" x 15 1/4" bottom edge deckle. 1915List1003Chicago: National Half Century Anniversary Exposition and Lincoln Jubilee 1915. Felt pennant measuring 38 x 15 inches. Lettering slightly faded very good condition overall. In celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of Lincoln's death the city of Chicago hosted the National Half Century Anniversary Exposition and Lincoln Jubilee to celebrate emancipation and the cultural achievements of African-Americans. The event was held at the Coliseum on August 23 - September 22 1915. The Illinois legislature appropriated $75000 for the month-long celebration. Seventeen states appointed African American delegates to attend the event as representatives. Delegates from other countries participated as well. Bishop Samuel Fallows the English-born clergyman and Union Army Colonel spent a decade promoting and organizing the event urging states such as New York to appoint representatives and encouraging Chicago's religious leaders to attend. Several hundred pastors from African-American churches did attend along with members of their congregations and most contemporary accounts of the jubilee advertise speeches by African-American religious leaders. Charles F. Gunther a local candy manufacturer and collector of Lincoln memorabilia lent his collection to the event it was later purchased by the Chicago Historical Society. The event's organizers anticipated close to half a million attendees. Though we find no record of actual attendance contemporary reports show crowds of tens of thousands attending at a time. <br /> The Colored Women's Civic League closed the exposition with a ceremony involving children. <br /> <br /> Despite the large undertaking and historical significance of the event few relics of the exhibition have survived. OCLC lists two copies of the official program for the event. The official report of the event History and Report of the Exhibition and Celebration to Commemorate the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Emancipation of the Negro has around 20 holdings. In 1959 President Dwight Eisenhower tapped Dowling to head the Arts Advisory Committee of the National Cultural Center in Washington. Dowling proposed the design of the center which later became the John F. Blum 1898 - 1981 Yale graduate who was engaged in espionage activities for the United States via the OSS and the subject of the 1998 biography "Blum - San! Scholar Soldier Gentleman Spy" by his nephew Robert S. Greene 1922-2013 American writer jazz musician documentarian and historian. Approx. 15" x 20 ¾" size; accomplished on heavy good quality Rives watermark paper; some smudging spotting to the image & background; in very good condition. With a 1981 black marker on paper of the backstage area of the Ballet "coulisses" signed and inscribed "For Paul C.B. Bonne Annee 1981 de tout coeur - as ever" 12" x 14 ¾" ; and a pencil sketch head portrait of Bob Greene signed "Remusat - for Bob Greene Paris 23 Dec 1980" 9" x 14" on plain paper little spot below signature and with a paper window-overlay; and an ink on paper drawing of dancers inscribed "Remusat - To Bob Greene affectionally Xmas eve 1980 Paris" 11 ¾" x 14 ¾". With 6 black and white photographic prints of Remusat portraiture: Paul C. Blum Shostakovich Khachaturian Ruggero-Gerlin Hindemith Alfred Cortot. Also with a photograph of Remusat's house in St. Jean-le-Thomas taken in 2007 and two portraits of the artist both mounted in frames one taken from a periodical and the other a digital image now degraded to yellow-green tones. With the 1994 catalog of Remusat's works "Les Americains dans l'Avranchin" French & English text 1994 commentary on the works and times with biography of the artist; 24 pages oblong format color illustrated light wear and in very good condition. The Yale Guide to the Paul Charles Blum Papers MS 900 state that Blum " was born on March 31 1898 in Yokohama Japan and spent his childhood in Japan Switzerland France and New York City a private in the Yale R.O.T.C. and enlisted in the U. S. Ambulance Service in 1917. He was sent overseas in 1918 and served with the French army from March 1918 to March 1919 awarded the Croix de Guerre returned to the United States in 1919 and graduated from the Sheffield Scientific School Yale University in 1921. Following graduation Blum was a literary agent and free-lance writer. He joined the Foreign Service during World War II remaining until 1954. Blum retired to Japan where he lived until his death in 1981 " In WWII Blum was station chief for the OSS in the X-2 counterintelligence department in Bern Switzerland. During his earlier military service in France in WWI he became closely acquainted with the artist Claude Remusat and the men maintained their friendship throughout their lives. Blum's nephew and biographer Bob Greene was early introduced to Remusat by his uncle and after Paul Blum's death remained in close friendly contact with Remusat as well until the artist died. Blum was also a noted collector of books and manuscript materials on early Japan and that country's early interactions with the West endowing the Collection at the Yokohama Archives of History Library with 7000 items including foreign books and magazines about Japan dating back to the 16th century old European maps of Japan and Asia and Japanese woodblock prints. A photograph album composed of 29 heavy cardstock leaves each titled with a French hospital with a mounted photograph of the interns of 1908-09. On the mounts printed below the images are the surname-identification of the new doctors along with a quote from a famous medical personage. Photographic studio not identified aside from the printed notice in the surround of "Cliche Femina." Our research indicates that these albums were produced by the Compagnie des Eaux Minerales. as promotional devices; the cover titles are further personalized and include the name of one of the graduates A Monsieur Corylles actually Coryllos from the Hopital Cochin Paris. Dr. Coryllos 1880-1938 was an eminent thoracic surgeon and pioneer in the use of the mobile field hospital saving lives during military conflicts Every photograph black and white silver gelatin process; approx. 4 ¾" x 6" size is characterized by extraordinary clarity and very professionally taken; several of them presenting the graduating physician's candid expressions of humor - one posing with a monkey on his back another lugging a huge travel-box by a rope over his shoulders many with pet dogs & cats one with what appears to be a monstrous lizard; in another three men sit astride sheep and a goat; other portraits promoting expressions of extreme gravitas. The Hopital Des Enfants Malades with two women identified Mlle. Bouteil and Mme. Debre; the Hopital de la Pitie with Mme. Long; Mlle. 194326376Williamsport Pennsylvania: Not Published 1943. Over 300 individual pieces of correspondence sent to Betty I. Carvell later Eckert mostly from her parents and with a few from friends. A few of the letters are from women who served with her in the SPARS the women's branch of the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve established in 1942. Ms. Carvell Eckert's service career is documented by her mailing addresses: March of 1943 she attempted to join the USMC there is an official letter from their office requesting information; by August she is a A.S. W-10 billeted at the USCG women's training facility at the Palm Beach Biltmore Hotel Florida; becomes S 2/c advances to S 1/c and finally addressing her as Coxswain. Her living & working "barracks" address throughout 1944-45 was at the Embassy Hotel 154 W 70th Street NY. According to the official site 978 women officers and 11868 enlisted women served in the SPARs during World War II. Most letters are from her parents in Williamsport Pennsylvania. They usually consist of a letter each from father & mother and detail the vicissitudes of living in poverty their continuous and debilitating ill-health and their nearby relations and the struggle of finding work; having to buy expensive medicines required for their numerous maladies: rheumatism pneumonia high blood pressure sciatica nearly constant colds and bed-ridden bouts of collapse from various causes. Several letters written by the father go into great detail concerning meals that they occasionally are bought or can afford - the most basic of foods and preparation are appreciated as great important feasts. Occasionally having mashed potatoes are noteworthy as a luxurious culinary event. Local news is of great importance to Ms. Carvell who asked for the 2 Williamsport newspapers to be sent. Her parents are so poor they have to ask for money from their daughter to pay for the newspapers use the phone to call her and pay their rent as they move from place to place in the town. The father's writing is fairly literate and well-composed; the mother's is at an early grammar school level and still legible. Content includes local gossip neighborly strife and griping along with church school and other news regarding the town. During and after wartime there are concerns about brownouts due to the coal shortage worries about another war and labor & strike fears. A couple of elderly aunts run a shop rent out rooms and work until they die. At one point while still in the USCG Betty marries Robert Eckert and moves to Baltimore. Her parents are so poor they can't afford to attend. She also has a friend in Sheffield England who writes several letters to her over the years describing a pitiless tedious overworked life; a hard pregnancy; sick blind burned bruised children the telling of which hints at parental abuse; the injuries while severe are always reported as 'accidental' because the children are 'clumsy.' The post-war situation in England is rife with poverty; the most basic amenities are scarce. It was worth reporting that someone had traveled and been able to gain 4 pounds due to better nutrition possibilities and who promptly lost on return to the daily grind. Many of the greeting cards for holidays or personal events are sent unsigned. Also Betty's mom invariably signs her letters "Mother Carvell" not Mom or Mother; as if she may have been an adoptive parent; her father is always simply signed 'Dad'. A few SPARS-related items include a couple of decals and a one-stripe shoulder patch; also an official letter asking her to promote others to join the Coast Guard after her service commitment with guidelines for prospects & requirements for enlistment. There are a couple of dozen loose greeting cards and loose empty envelopes some of which may belong to the cards. There are a few news-clippings related to Williamsport news a letter from France from a service friend with a one-franc coin taped-in and some Methodist church bulletin ephemera from the town. Condition: For convenience the letters have been chronologically grouped by year and we will ship them thus. The first few years' envelopes are lacking stamps as Betty's father was collecting them; later years have their stamps & cancellations intact. Some soiling wear & tear to the envelopes; everything in very good condition. The content portrays small-town Pennsylvania American life in the 1940s and early 1950s the importance of family support and connection in the face of economic uncertainty ill-health and the struggle to start support and maintain families at all stages of life especially for women. . Jimmy Starr 1902 - 1990 is best known as a Hollywood columnist though he was also a writer and actor known for The Corpse Came C.O.D. 1947 A Night for Crime 1943 and Pink Pajamas 1929. Some of the Twentieth Century-Fox films Mr. Starr may have enjoyed include such popular productions released in 1940 as The Grapes of Wrath directed by John Ford starring Henry Fonda and Jane Darwell. The detective turns the wife's file over to her husband and some questionable behavior is discovered. The husband has a melt down over the wife's imagined infidelity those scenarios s set to music.Masterful direction and acting make this an all -time comedy classic.</p><p>Delightful scenes in these cards display the atmosphere of fun. Set was lightly used and displays a bit of storage wear mostly in slightly creased right side blank white margin. Title card shows a bit of scuffing to right blank white margin and a small repaired tear to same margin. Card no. shows a bit of use with a pinhole at top center blank white margin and two areas with tears near the bottom margin of the card one a bit of paper that was worked back in. Ann Ullman Hirsch 1929 - 2017 had formal musical training and education at Juilliard and NYU; she was a passionate musician music educator and administrator. In a career spanning more than 60 years she was well known on Long Island for her extensive musical contributions including founding the Eastern Suffolk School of Music in Riverhead in 1977 and serving as its executive director for 10 years. Pianist and violinist she was a valued member of the L.I. Sound Symphony and was a private piano instructor to children and adults. Named East End Woman of Year in Education East End Magazine Suffolk County NY 1979 and honored by Peconic Bay Zonta at a Celebration of Women in 2013. from her obituary in 27 East and several online sources Collection includes: 1975 A 68-page typed manuscript with 2 annotated working draft copies of "A Basic Guide for the Teaching of Piano" by Ann U. Hirsch. These include tipped-on photographs of students' correct form along with the teaching exercises in the text & with extra image-sheets and 35mm photographic negatives laid-in. One of the drafts has extensive marginal notation. All are accomplished one-side either on quality typing bond paper of the time or copies. The original set is a group of loose sheets; working drafts are in 3-ring binders. Ms. Hirsch' introduction explains her purpose since according to her research - "There are also many fine books both long and short written by great pianists that suggest technical and artistic approaches for the advanced and professional performers but my purpose is hopefully to have written something for those who work primarily with beginners. I have tried to make it personal and informal while at the same time offer specific advice in the areas I consider most crucial. My hope is that if this book were to be published it could be made inexpensively in pocket book size and thus be available on counters in music stores as well as in colleges for all those who study piano and expect to teach it too" With 3 typed original letters from Ms. Hirsch to the music publishers Theodore Presser Co. Sterling Publishing Co. and Prentis Hall Publications all describing the content and asking in similar fashion to consider her book for publication. Included here are these three publishers' rejection-replies & another letter from Dover publishing which also rejected her project for various reasons. Most approx. 7" x 8 ½" size; single folded sheets with four printed sides. 1980-1984 Approx. 30 one or two page programs for the ESSM concerts student recitals often given monthly and a few other miscellaneous programs sponsored by ESSM in the Riverhead NY area: Jazz concerts percussion events concerts by faculty & guests student presentations. With personnel players pieces performed. 1986 A file folder with approx. 30 typed pages of material some on ESSM letterhead. These papers recount the struggle apparently of several months duration of the music school's attempts to restructure the board of directors and executive functions find adequate and sustainable financing and address critical accounting insurance liability and staffing issues which threatened the institution's continued existence. Some of the letters reveal troubling circumstances and finally include the resignation of Ms. Hirsch as the school's executive director and her choice of ceasing any further activities associated with the school including teaching. Other letters document and list various complaints needed changes salary & staffing requirements involving Ms. Hirsch board members and others who were involved in the running of the school. Miscellaneous: A three-ring binder with thumb-guide sections with some dozens of pages; this was Ms. Hirsch' own personal teaching and performance log: Students; Billing; Music; Musicians & Schedule.
