55587Representation of one of the battles conduced by Michele Arcangelo Pezza also known as Fra Diavolo at the end of the eighteenth century. He was a famous Neapolitan guerrilla leader who resisted the French occupation of Naples proving an inspirational practitioner of popular insurrection. Pezza figures prominently in folklore and fiction. He appears in several works of Alexandre Dumas including The Last Cavalier: Being the Adventures of Count Sainte-hermine in the Age of Napoleon not published until 2007 and in Washington Irving's short story ""The Inn at Terracina"". His nick-name ´Fra Diavolo´ litterally Brother Devil was given to him when he was a young boy. Soon after he was born he became sick. His mother swore to St. Francis of Paola that he would take care of his sick son. In return the child would have been wearing a sackcloth until complete consumption. Michele recovered so during his childhood he wore the sackcloth. Once at school his unsettled behavior made his teacher pronounce such words as:´You are not Friar Michele Arcangelo! You are Friar Devil!´. Thence he was renown with such a name throughout his all life. This large woodcut was probably an image of a popular publication from Ulm or Nurenberg from around 1830. In the typical and somewhat primitive style of the popular graphic arts from the first half of the nineteenth century. Titled above:´Fra Diavolo oder die grossen rauber in den Abruzzen.´ Woodcut on paper; total: 395 x 470 mm; brown stain on he top left corner otherwise in very good conditions. hardcover

EN In 1760 the café of the cabaretier Ramponeau became very popular among the lower classes for its bad but extremely cheap wine. In fact it was at one point so popular that members of the higher classes also started to flock to the place. After a year a cancelled contract with the theater producer Gaudon Ramponeau fell into oblivion as fast as he had risen to fame. In two separated plates are represented the interior and the exterior of the café; at the bottom in a circular frame the portraits of Ramponeau in one print and that of his wife on the other l Etching on paper; total each ca. 220 x 340 mm. unknown
65233View on the ruins of the ""Huis ter Kleef"" a castle near Haarlem.Shepherds with dogs in front of the ruins. Birds flying in the sky above the ruins. Dated and signed below 1649 Maas or Maes. The date seems original but the signature doesn't. In a sale catalog from 2010 lot. 587 it is considered as a drawing by a young Nicholaes Maes 1634-1693 who in 1650s was beginning with his apprenticeship at Rembrandt's.On the bottom right corner are traces of what seems to be a collector's mark stamped in black ink fashioned as a ramping animal a lion in profile turned towards the left. not in Lugt.See R. van 't Zelfde 'Josua Breckerveld 1644-1700' Delineavit et Sculpsit 23 juli 2001 p. 11-17 illustrated. Drawing on paper in pen with brown ink washed in grey with some highlights in white. Total: 270 x 404 mm. Pasted down on cardboard an operation that is contributing to the spreading of foxing especially on the top region. The drawing was probably divided into two pieces from a notebook and recomposed by pasting it down on a wide cardboard. On the back another date was added in pen and brown ink ""1885."" and might refer to the pasting down the kind of cardboard would be consistent with that period. Other more recent numbers on the backing in pencil. Possibly the drawing was pasted down due to a minor defect of the paper located on the shirt of the sitting shepherd. The hole has been repaired from the backing and the lacuna was filled in with pencil. This area extends for less than 5 mm. unknown
