179138981791. 13 x 9 inches. Dark brown body colour on prepared paper. Inscribed "N.2.Stück" and "am 9ten Aprill 1791--nach der Natur gezeichnet von JEW" ink collector's stamp "Linel-Smlg. No." followed by pencilled number "1046" all on verso. Provenance: Linel ink collector's stamp on verso.

A high quality image that clearly is drawn from life as the inscription claims. The artist's use of a dark prepared ground recalls the work of Barbara Regina Dietsch and her family. A search of Nissen's index of artists reveals one possible name: the Swiss artist Johann Emmanuel Wyss 1782-1837. However the maturity and assurance shown in the present drawing would seem to rule him out: he could have been no older than nine in April 1791. unknown books

19302280Chicago 1930. Loose_leaf. Red white and blue envelope. Very good. Envelope - 9.5 x 16.5 cm. Autograph card affixed onto airmail envelope dated May 13th 1930 dated shortly after Laura Ingalls broke an aviation record - addressed in print to Mr. York Briddell of St. Petersburg Florida - Director of the American Air Mail Society. Accompanied by a clipped article from the May 4th 1930 Chicago Evening Post Pertaining to Ingalls' breaking the women's record for consecutive loops in an airplane.

Laura Ingalls 1893-1967 was a highly successful female pilot of the 1930's with numerous records as a stunt pilot and achieved multiple firsts as an aviatrix - among them the longest solo flight by a woman 17000 miles first solo flight by a woman from North to South America first solo flight around South America by man or woman and first American woman to fly the Andes solo. But as war with Germany overshadowed the late 1930's Ingalls charming demeanor gave way to more destructive behavior by flying over Washington D.C. on Sept. 26 1939 to drop one-page antiwar pamphlets which brought sanctions and some bad press. Ten days after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941 and America declared war against Japan Germany and Italy U.S. officials charged Ingalls with being an unregistered agent for the German Reich. It seems Ingalls used her award-winning celebrity and talent to take money from Baron Ulrich von Gienanth the second secretary of the German Embassy. Ingalls was charged and convicted of failing to register with the government as a paid Nazi agent and was sentenced to prison on February 20 1942 and released on October 5 1943 after serving 20 months. After her release she wrote about the Normandy landings: "This whole invasion is a power lust blood drunk orgy in a war which is unholy and for which the U.S. will be called to terrible accounting. They the Nazis fight the common enemy. They fight for independence of Europe - independence from the Jews. Bravo!" Envelope faintly soiled autograph clean. Minor soiling to newspaper clipping.

unknown books

14823785Venice:: Erhard Ratdolt 14 October 1482. FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION of Hyginus' "Poeticon Astronomicon". Quarto:. 19 x 14 cm. Collation: a-f8 g10 a1 blank a2r dedication to M. Fabius Quintilianus a3r text g9r commendatory poem by Jacobus Sentinus g10r poem and verse colophon by Johannes Santritter g10v blank. 58 leaves. 31 lines. Types 3:91G text 7:92G heading on a2r 91 Gk a few words. Title on a2r printed in red 11- 7- 5- and 3-line white-on-black woodcut initials. 47 half-page woodcuts probably designed by Johannes Santritter of the constellation and planet figures. Illustrated with 47 half-page woodcuts of the constellations and the planets personified. The text of Hyginus was first published in an unillustrated edition in Ferrara in 1475. A very good copy in 18th c. stiff vellum. The initial blank is soiled and stained. Light stains to top of second leaf and leaves d1-2. Soiling to f1 and blank verso of final leaf with faded inscription. The "Poeticon Astronomicon" more correctly the "Astronomica" is an ancient Roman work on the constellations chiefly based on the work of the Greek scientist Eratosthenes 3rd c. B.C. The work was traditionally attributed to the first century writer C. Julius Hyginus the Director of the Palatine Library under the Emperor Augustus but the extant text is now believed based on stylistic analysis to be an abridgement of Hyginus' work made in the late second century. The fact that the order of the constellations in the poem follows precisely that of Ptolemy's "Almagest" further strengthens the case for a second century date. A remarkable aspect of Hyginus' text is his insistence on the use of astronomical models in particular a celestial globe as an aid to teaching or explaining astronomical principles and phenomena particularly for "discussions on the inter-relationships between the constellations and especially between the constellations and the celestial circles."Lippincott p.4Like Manilius' "Astronomicon" and Proclus' "Sphaera" a text that Hyginus sought to improve upon the "Poeticon Astronomicon" was of special interest to Renaissance astronomers who desired accurate editions of ancient texts from which they might derive a clear understanding of the astronomical knowledge of the Romans and Greeks thereby establishing a firm foundation upon which to undertake astronomy's "renewal".Hyginus' text which gives detailed accounts of the myths associated with each of the constellations served as source material for artists in the Middle Ages and Renaissance one of the most famous examples of the text's influence being the splendid ceiling painted around 1511 by Peruzzi for Agostino Chigi in the Sala di Galatea of the Villa Farnesina See Förster Farnesina-Studien 1880 p. 40.One of the chief interests in Ratdolt's editions of Hyginus 1482 and 1485 lies in the illustrations of the constellations the first such illustrations to appear in a printed book. These images derive from medieval manuscript and other artistic sources –though a specific source has not been identified. The figures appear in medieval European costume and in the words of Redgrave "There is a vigour and quaintness about these woodcuts which merit recognition." These images proved enormously influential serving as models for the representation of the constellations in stellar atlases and celestial maps for centuries to come."In many instances these medieval European often mythological constellation figures differed notably from those used by Ptolemy and his Islamic successors . Several stylistic conventions first published in Ratdolt's woodcuts endured for several centuries both in the numerous editions of Hyginus and in the various maps derived therefrom . Ratdolt's figures led directly to those of Jacob de Gheyn 1600 and through him to those of Johannes Bayer 1603." Warner The Sky ExploredThe Contents of Hyginus' "Poeticon Astronomicon"Hyginus tells us that he intends to give a better description of the celestial sphere than Aratus had done in his "De Sphaera". Book I gives a brief overview of the cosmography of the universe the celestial sphere the Earth and its zones and the Zodiac. Book II is a compendium of myths related to the constellations the five planets Mercury Venus Mars Saturn and Jupiter as well as the Sun Moon and Milky Way.Book III is Hyginus' star catalogue. It is in this book that Ratdolt's woodcuts appear. "Each constellation is described in the same order as in Book II in terms of its location relative to the surrounding constellations and the celestial circles with some indications being given as to the overall shape and disposition of the figure. In addition Hyginus provides a list of the positions of the stars relative to the figure itself describing the placements in terms of 'left' and 'right' and 'above' and 'below' in line with the tradition of descriptive star catalogues. Moreover he tends to list the stars from the top of a figure downwards or from the head to the feet regardless of the orientation of the figure within the sky. This is very different from the way the more mathematically-oriented astronomers such as Hipparchus or Ptolemy describe the constellations."Book IV returns to the subject of cosmology and to astronomical topics such as the position of the constellations on each celestial circle the unequal division of the night and day and the risings and settings of the constellations relative to the signs of the zodiac. He discusses the movements of the Sun and the Moon and the five planets and touches upon Pythagorian notions of the harmony of the spheres." 187627113United Kingdom: Philosophical Magazine 1876. 14 pages. Read before the British Association September 1876 and published in the Philosophical Magazine for October 1876 this is the separately printed and paginated offprint of that presentation regarding the conversion of gravity into other forms of energy. James Croll 1821 - 1890 a largely self-educated British geologist and climatologist responsible for advancing ".the theory that global weather patterns would be indirectly affected by the periodic changes in the eccentricity of the earth's orbit about the sun for a winter occurring when the earth was in the aphelion of its most eccentric orbit would be bitterly cold and this would set in motion a chain of large-scale climatic changes resulting in large tracts of glacial land ice-an ice age. Croll postulated a global climatic feedback system resting on the combined proven physical phenomena of the variation of eccentricity the precession of the equinoxes and the motion of the apsides of the orbit itself. Such a system accounted for cyclic global climate patterns." David Kushner in the ODNB Title page with the small name-stamp of collector George R. He also sent the Royal Society copies of the registers of temperature that he kept for a long period of years. Set out in six 'memoires'; with a folding plate; Rumford's researches regarding experiments in heat. Sir Benjamin Count Rumford in the nobility of the Holy Roman empire Thompson 1753 - 1814 American-born & educated British royalist natural philosopher and philanthropist who left during the Revolution and who ".Once in Britain Thompson presented himself as an expert on America rather than as a refugee and became the main contact between American loyalists in England and the British government.Like Davy's Faraday's and Tyndall's Rumford's is a story of the social mobility which science could bring: the farm boy and shop assistant became the Massachusetts Yankee at the courts of Europe. He spoke well German French Spanish and Italian; he played billiards against himself and enjoyed chess; he was a good draughtsman; indifferent to literature sculpture and painting he had a great taste for landscape gardening. His daughter Countess Rumford returned to America and died in 1852. In his eloge at the Institut de France on 9 January 1815 Georges Cuvier emphasized the revolutions warfare and conflicting loyalties which had dominated Rumford's life and was mildly embarrassed by his pursuit of honours and wealth. He stressed the value of Rumford's practical inventions with their scientific basis. Later to Tyndall lecturing at the Royal Institution in 1883 Rumford's researches on the nature of heat put him firmly in the tradition leading to James Joule conservation of energy and modern thermodynamics.Brown author of the biography of Rumford places his researches on heat in their context where the implications Tyndall saw were not perceived by Rumford or his contemporaries and where the diversity and utility of his discoveries based on research rather than empiricism were most impressive. He has an important place in the origins of applied science." David Knight in the ODNB Title page with the small name-stamp of collector George R.
