Sold by HUDSON SCOTT Stationer and Account Book Manufacturer Carlisle.' Manuscript title on front cover reads 'Sale a/c of J. Sagar under Bill of Sale to Mr. Stubbs 1856.' and 'Effects of John Sagar Ironmonger Botchergate under Bill of Sale to Mr. Stubbs. - Jany. 23. 1856.-' Internally clean in grubby wraps. Description of sale on first page signed 'William Browne Auctioneer'. The 115 lots raised £143 8s 9d. Each lot carries the purchase price and the name of the purchaser often with occupation or place of residence. Following the lots is a list of expences incurred by the auctioneer including the cost of 'Advertising in Journal and Printing bills and Catalogues of Sale' 'Advertising in Patriot' 'posting and distributing 130 very large Bills in Town & surrounding district' 'one Man assisting at Sale arranging lots &c' and 'Bellman calling Sale'. No copy of the printed catalogue of the sale appears to be listed on COPAC. BBTI only notes Browne as an auctioneer in 1837. 23 January 1856. All the stadholders of Holland are on a large decorated staircase; at the top of Willem I and at the bottom of Willem V.Willem V is escorted down the stairs by Frederick William II king of Prussia and Bonaparte.Some important historical events are depicted on the steps. In the background a map of the Netherlands and on the left several sailing ships. At the top of the stairs is a painting of the covenant of the nobles and the beheading of the counts of Egmond and Horne.Under the picture a seven-line caption in Dutch: ""TAFFEREEL VAN HET STADHOUDERSCHAP IN DE NEDERLANDEN VAN A. 1565 tot 1802.""Signed at bottom: ""W. Kok del & sculp. / J.D. Jongh Excud.""NL Overzicht van alle stadhouders in de Nederlanden van Willem I tot en met Willem V. De stadhouders staan in chronologische volgorde op de treden van een grote trap in een paleis. Bovenaan Willem I die vermoord wordt door Balthasar Gerards. Daarna Maurits Frederik Hendrik Willem II met Andries en Cornelis Bicker als vertegenwoordigers van Amsterdam Willem III en Willem IV. Na Willem IV volgen de voogden van Willem V: Anna en Lodewijk Ernst. Onderaan stapt tenslotte Willem V als laatste van de stadhouders van de trap af op een steen gemerkt Oranienstein verwijzend naar Slot Oranienstein in Duitsland waarheen Willem vertrok na het erkennen van de Bataafse Republiek als onderdeel van bepalingen van de Vrede van Amiens op 27 maart 1802. With a 3pp. A.L.s. on The Pines letterhead dated 14 XII 06 asking an acquaintance to lunch or dinner in hopes of obtaining an "opinion upon a point connected with abeyance in an old barony. It is connected with a novel that I am now working on." The letter is in a secretarial hand but is signed in full by Watts-Dunton. Aylwin the author's best known work is a roman a clef with "a number of disguised Pre-Raphaelite characters including Rossetti".
