Mankiewicz; Twentieth Century Fox. Brilliant Academy Award-nominated screenplay by director Mankiewicz which dealt with racism and bigotry. The film was shocking and controversial when released for its subject matter and perhaps more so today but for the reasons of its political incorrectness. It is an important document of where Americans were in 1950 and how far things have come in the years since. This is one of the most dynamic pieces of poster art ever created. The campaign was known to feature some of the very earliest of Saul Bass' art. The lay out for this piece of art is attributed to Paul Rand with Saul Bass perhaps involved in the title treatment. One photo trimmed for publication one with printed text on verso JUST ABOUT FINE. This is one of a few post-WWII Hollywood films which attempted to come to grips with racism. It was compromised in various ways including the use of a white actress as Pinky a light-skinned African American. But it also contained distinguished performances from various Black actors including an Oscar-nominated turn by Ethel Waters as the protagonist's mother. Waters is in eight of these photos; five feature other African American actors including two of the legendary Nina Mae McKinney in her first major studio film in twenty years since the 1929 HALLELUJAH. unknown books

Poster was folded and is now on linen. There has been some fold touch-up and some touch-up to white of the letters in Barbara Lawrence credit. The tears along the top and bottom blank white margins have been touched up with paint as well the bottom border completely which is the reason the copyright information is no longer present VERY GOOD. unknown books

Set was lightly used and displays a bit of storage wear mostly in slightly creased right side blank white margin. Title card shows a bit of scuffing to right blank white margin and a small repaired tear to same margin. Card no. shows a bit of use with a pinhole at top center blank white margin and two areas with tears near the bottom margin of the card one a bit of paper that was worked back in. Containing approximately 90 black and white photographic images of varying sizes; from 1 1/4" square to 3 ½" x 5 ½" postcard size; most of them average about 2 ½" x 3 ½." Mostly these are candid photographs of the life of young boys and men in Austria and Germany with internal dating on some of the photographs of 1929 to 1935 and additional place and dating information on some. There are photos of children mostly young boys at class and later as young men on class trips hiking cycling; with adult chaperones; for the older boys the educational duties appear to be supervised by Christian religious male instructors only. Also containing a few group photographs of men students priests; and some church interior views. Some of the images have the photography studio rubber stamps on the reverse of the state pharmacy in Rottweil. Five of the images are commercial images of architectural landmarks in Vienna. The photographs are corner-mounted not glued into two hardcover albums with black paper pages side-string tied. One album measures 6" x 8 ¼" and the other 7 ½" x 10 ½" approx. size; both albums with art-deco themed cloth covers. Covers chipped with tears short archival tape repairs. A sewn cloth spine has been affixed to the booklet; it has become frayed at the bottom and the stitching has been cut; the cloth spine could readily be removed if desired. Verso of rear cover advertises other McLoughlin children's books. A volume in Aunt Mary's Little Series. Contents short illustrated verses in good condition. Cover depicts title character with grotesque nose. Evidently a much admired booklet warranting preservation with needle and thread. In present state fair condition only. .
