19302280Chicago 1930. Loose_leaf. Red white and blue envelope. Very good. Envelope - 9.5 x 16.5 cm. Autograph card affixed onto airmail envelope dated May 13th 1930 dated shortly after Laura Ingalls broke an aviation record - addressed in print to Mr. York Briddell of St. Petersburg Florida - Director of the American Air Mail Society. Accompanied by a clipped article from the May 4th 1930 Chicago Evening Post Pertaining to Ingalls' breaking the women's record for consecutive loops in an airplane.

Laura Ingalls 1893-1967 was a highly successful female pilot of the 1930's with numerous records as a stunt pilot and achieved multiple firsts as an aviatrix - among them the longest solo flight by a woman 17000 miles first solo flight by a woman from North to South America first solo flight around South America by man or woman and first American woman to fly the Andes solo. But as war with Germany overshadowed the late 1930's Ingalls charming demeanor gave way to more destructive behavior by flying over Washington D.C. on Sept. 26 1939 to drop one-page antiwar pamphlets which brought sanctions and some bad press. Ten days after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941 and America declared war against Japan Germany and Italy U.S. officials charged Ingalls with being an unregistered agent for the German Reich. It seems Ingalls used her award-winning celebrity and talent to take money from Baron Ulrich von Gienanth the second secretary of the German Embassy. Ingalls was charged and convicted of failing to register with the government as a paid Nazi agent and was sentenced to prison on February 20 1942 and released on October 5 1943 after serving 20 months. After her release she wrote about the Normandy landings: "This whole invasion is a power lust blood drunk orgy in a war which is unholy and for which the U.S. will be called to terrible accounting. They the Nazis fight the common enemy. They fight for independence of Europe - independence from the Jews. Bravo!" Envelope faintly soiled autograph clean. Minor soiling to newspaper clipping.

unknown books

1907403892Cincinnati: Johnson & Hardin for the Author 1907. 8vo. 252 pp. Frontispiece portrait of the author 57 plates. Original grey cloth blocked in red on front cover lettered on spine. A very good copy hinges cracked light wear at extremities. As-issued without jacket. SCARCE FIRST EDITION one of 500 copies of the "Subscriber's Edition" this copy out-of-series. Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "To my friend Henry Taylor Birch Captain of Antioch College Base Ball Team 1867-8 from Alfred K. Nippert Cincinnati O Oct 17th 1937." Birch was the pitcher in the historic first game between the Cincinnati Red Stockings and Antioch College. He later became a prominent Chicago attorney and philanthropist. A public park in Ft. Lauderdale FL bears his name and he donated paintings to the Art Institute of Chicago. Nippert was one of the most prominent judges in Cincinnati his wife was Maud Bamble Nippert heir to the Proctor & Gamble Company. Nippert traveled to Germany in 1916 with an unofficial message from President Wilson: he met with Kaiser Wilhelm stating that while Wilson did not doubt the sincerity of the German leaders he felt he had the support of the American people in his controversy with the Germans over submarine warfare. "In 1869 when the Cincinnati Red Stockings began their inaugural season as history's first professional baseball team they played a preseason game at the site of what is now the Grand Union Terminal in Cincinnati against the Antiochs who were regarded as one of the finest amateur clubs in Ohio. The game was played on May 15 1869 and Cincinnati defeated Antioch 41-7. Antioch had been scheduled to host the first game of this professional tour on May 31 1869 but pouring rain and an unplayable field kept the teams off the diamond. So while Antioch was not a part of the first professional baseball game the college does hold claim to hosting the first ever rainout in professional baseball" Guschov Stephen D. The Red Stockings of Cincinnati: Base Ball's First All-Professional Team and its Historic 1869 and 1870 Seasons Jefferson NC.: McFarland & Co. 1998 p. 45. Ellard writes of the game with Antioch on page 154 though he gets the details wrong see Dan Hotaling "The Antioch Connection The First Professional Game". Ellard's father had been a founding member of the Red Stockings often cited as the first professional club. Most of the book is dedicated to the Red Stockings of 1866-1870 which went undefeated for 1869 and much of 1870. The author had unique access to the original records of the club. .

Johnson & Hardin for the Author hardcover books

WALTER-FILM000001No binding. Fine. Fine Art Print Vintage original 11 x 14"" 28 x 35 cm. lobby card USA. Tyrone Power Maureen O'Hara Laird Cregar Thomas Mitchell George Sanders Anthony Quinn dir: Henry King; Twentieth Century Fox. None other than Ben Hecht and Seton I. Miller wrote the screenplay which brought Rafael Sabatino's swashbuckling pirate tale to the Technicolor screen. For the most part though the writers used the title and wrote an original story. Set in Jamaica there was second unit footage from that country Mexico Cuba Honduras and Florida but most of the filming took place on Stage 6 of the Twentieth Century Fox lot. The movie ran afoul with the Breen office when they saw that the main characters played by Power and O'Hara commit suicide at the end; a new ending had to be filmed. With the eye-popping Technicolor which set Fox apart during this time score by Alfred Newman and beautiful stars this was one of the finest of the romantic swashbucklers. In this card are Maureen O'Hara as the kidnapped-yet-feisty Lady Margaret Denby and her captor Jaime Waring as played by Tyrone Power FINE. unknown books
