194025612Garrison New York: Ave Maria Hour & St. Anthony's Legion 1940. A group of 30 black and white Albertype-process postcards all with different images of this retreat-house monastery located in Garrison New York. Founded in 1898 the Society of Atonement is a Catholic Franciscan order that maintains various community outreach programs; their founder Rev. Father Paul James Francis Lewis T. Wattson is currently a candidate under review for saintly canonization. The cards have two copyright notices on their backs about half the cards with Ave Maria Hour and the Prayer of The Blessings of God's Poor Upon You printed in the stamp section; the others with the copyright of St. Anthony's Legion with the prayer of May Jesus Mary Joseph be With Us On Our Way. Images include Father Paul school the cloister walk Little Flower Friary living quarters pictures of the grounds landscaping statuary friars at prayer and play interior and exterior views of the buildings. All of the cards with short printed descriptions of the images on their reverse sides. Not dated; however the Fr. Paul card notes his death in 1940. These are tipped-in via standard corner-mounts to black paper album pages approx. 10 1/4" x 13 1/2" size contained in a chipped and worn Kork-Craft Products binding. Yukon 1 of the Kodiak City Dock and 2 of large totem poles site unidentified - the balance of the Alaska large-format images of glacier lakes fishing apparatus stream; the rest of the large format images are 11 ruins & scenery presumably in Central America unidentified one cropped smaller and one a blow-up of a scene; 2 copies of a man in a kilt wearing military decorations; and 4 images of what appear to be European locations & memorials & one of a staged scene of a Caucasian woman dancing in a harem outfit on sand dunes; with 72 8" x 10" images including 37 Alaska views including one of Mt. 195526245United States of America: Not Published 1955. Approx. 150 photographs mostly in color and mostly documenting the ordination ceremonies of a Catholic priest taking place circa 1960s. From internal evidence this ordination appears to be that of a Fr. John Keenan. Other associated images appear to be of relatives and friends some of which are also ordained religious nuns and priests some identified. Most of the photographs are held in clear six-to-a-page sleeves in a photo-binder of the time; most of the photos are approx. 3 3/4" x 5" size; some images are also laid-in loose and are of various formats with a few identified school photos. Original artwork on paper signed Rose Graubart in lower right corner in ink; also signed faintly again by her in the right corner in pencil. Not framed approx. 11 3/4" x 17 3/4" size. Accomplished with black ink on light blue paper appears composed as a monoprint using a stencil or cutout for the main figures & block sections; raking light reveals added black ink for emphasis as well as fine lines within the figures. Some edge tips wear and a few closed edge-tears corner tips chipped away; old tape residue from mounting visible on back top edge; little bit of old taping at corner edges as well. With The artists catalog "Prints by Mark Freeman" 1964 Parrish Art Museum Southampton NY - Part 2 Lithographs section - which gives this information about the work: " This group consists of Lithographs almost all in color. Chronologically these prints represent the artist's earlier work most of the editions having been produced between 1950 and 1960 .Editions of Lithographs are limited to a maximum of 75 prints." The catalog depicts this lithograph. With A typed letter signed by the artist dated October 26 1993 on printed "Mark Freeman Union Square NY" letterhead. Within the artist states that " I believe that the print you have was donated to the Guild Hall East Hampton NY probably for a charity event in the Sixties when I was active in participating in the Annual Fairs .As to the prints of your inquiry: I have finally located two impressions with green background as in our copy. They were "artists Proofs" tried for effect; the edition was printed in brownish peach sky. The green proofs are rare - only four I believe Please let me know about the "Strange Moonlight" print. Sincerely Mark Freeman." The artist in his communication also included a color photocopy of a " section of the print which gives you the coloring of the edition. and initialed MF" With A catalog of his works at an exhibition held at the Sylvan Cole Gallery NY 1987 and another catalog from the Elliott Museum Stuart Florida 1991 and the original mailing envelope sent to his correspondent.
