WALTER-FILM001074No binding. Fine. Fine Art Print Vintage original 11 x 14"" 28 x 35 cm. title lobby card USA. Richard Widmark Linda Darnell Stephen McNally Sidney Poitier dir: Joseph L. Mankiewicz; Twentieth Century Fox. Brilliant Academy Award-nominated screenplay by director Mankiewicz which dealt with racism and bigotry. The film was shocking and controversial when released for its subject matter and perhaps more so today but for the reasons of its political incorrectness. It is an important document of where Americans were in 1950 and how far things have come in the years since. This is one of the most dynamic pieces of poster art ever created. The campaign was known to feature some of the very earliest of Saul Bass' art. The lay out for this piece of art is attributed to Paul Rand with Saul Bass perhaps involved in the title treatment. Card features Aug. 12 1950 stamp on verso is like new pristine and never used FINE. unknown books

Catalog no. SAFR 13563./ Bio/History: The Spartan was built in 1874 in East Boston Massachusetts in the yard of Robert E. Jackson. The vessel was of a type known as a "Half Clipper" or "Down Easter" a class of medium sized clipper ships built in the northeast states and was rated at 1448 tons. The ships dimensions were 207' x 40' x 24. She was built for J. Henry Sears of Boston. The ship had a memorable career. On March 28 1878 after a voyage from Manila the Spartan went aground in New York harbor near Fire Island. The ship was salvaged and repaired and was later sold to Commander T.H. Allen of San Francisco. After some years of trading the Spartan was being used as a coal drogher in the Pacific trades. On August 19 1905 on a voyage from Newcastle Australia to Kaanapali Hawaii she went aground on the east coast of Maui. This time the vessel and her cargo of coal were a total loss. From an OCLC search by us which revealed this entry for the "Spartan Papers" at this SF institution dated 1897 There are several sailing ships named "Spartan" including another from this era which had been working for the Union Line of UK ships. . 183527114United Kingdom: The Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society 1835. 329 - 343 pages; extracted from the Royal Society Transactions. James Farquharson 1781 - 1843 British writer on science among his several scientific interests here ".explained the formation of ice at the bottom of running water a phenomenon already discussed by Arago and others in terms of the radiation of heat from the bottom of the stream cooling its bed more quickly under certain conditions than the water flowing over it. He also sent the Royal Society copies of the registers of temperature that he kept for a long period of years. This led him to investigate the origin and progress of currents of colder and warmer air moving over the face of a flat country surrounded by hills and their effects upon vegetation." Brush; M.D. in the U.S. Navy; a surgeon & medical inspector from 1861-1894. Approx. 9" x 12" size; bound in the original plain brown paper wrappers. 187627113United Kingdom: Philosophical Magazine 1876. 14 pages. Read before the British Association September 1876 and published in the Philosophical Magazine for October 1876 this is the separately printed and paginated offprint of that presentation regarding the conversion of gravity into other forms of energy. James Croll 1821 - 1890 a largely self-educated British geologist and climatologist responsible for advancing ".the theory that global weather patterns would be indirectly affected by the periodic changes in the eccentricity of the earth's orbit about the sun for a winter occurring when the earth was in the aphelion of its most eccentric orbit would be bitterly cold and this would set in motion a chain of large-scale climatic changes resulting in large tracts of glacial land ice-an ice age. Croll postulated a global climatic feedback system resting on the combined proven physical phenomena of the variation of eccentricity the precession of the equinoxes and the motion of the apsides of the orbit itself. Such a system accounted for cyclic global climate patterns." David Kushner in the ODNB Title page with the small name-stamp of collector George R. Brush; M.D. in the U.S. Navy; a surgeon & medical inspector from 1861-1894. Approx. 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" size; bound in the original plain brown sewn thin paper wrappers. Sennert was an influential German professor notable for his contributions to medicine and atomic theory. Daniel Sennert born in Breslau was a student and the professor of medicine at the University of Wittenberg the intellectual center of Lutheranism. He was a renowned physician and an extremely prolific and influential writer whose popularity in his time is clear from the many editions of his works many of which were translated into English. These are Sennerts complete works in six parts each with a separate dated title page printed in red and black. His Opera was first published in Paris in 1641 and this edition expanded . with the omission of Tabulae institutionum and the addition of Vita Danielis Sennerti Judicia virorum clarissimorum Methodus discendi medicinam De curatione infantium De arthritide Tragopodagra Luciani in Greek and Latin Exoterica Epitome librorum de febribus Epistolarum medicinalium una cum responsorii D. Michaelis Doringei centuriae duae. The Epitome is reprinted from the Epitome edited by Claude Bonnet-- Krivatsy. This edition is regarded as the best. Among Sennerts many achievements he was the first to introduce chemistry as a subject of the medical curriculum and to make a serious effort to harmonize the Galenic doctrines of medicine with those of Paracelsus. Besides giving early accounts of scarlatina and rubella Sennert added to the knowledge of scurvy dysentery and alcoholism. He was an able clinician but a believer in witchcraft.-- Garrison-Morton 61. Scarcely found on the market these volumes are a complete set of Sennerts studies and 17th century medicine. Sennert was known to apply astrology to medicine and the supernatural origins of disease. Bifolium. 2 unnumbered pages of printed text; title printed to verso of second leaf else second leaf blank. 9-3/4" x 7-5/8"

Auction catalogue from the 1795 sale of 38 lots of the freehold estate owned by the late Charles Chaplin Esq. with manuscript prices and related notes in pencil and ink in a contemporary hand throughout. Occasional pencil notations and markings correct the printed acreage estimates of some lots. The Chaplins were members of the upper gentry and influential landowners in Lincolnshire. When the Louth Navigation -- a canal running from Louth in Lincolnshire to Tetney Haven at the mouth of the Humber -- was completed in 1770 Charles Chaplin managed to secure a 99 year lease of the tolls despite the terms of the canal's Act of Parliament limiting such leases to just seven years. The Louth Navigation Trust per the Louth Canal website notes that control and management of the tolls became "virtually hereditary" and led to considerable commercial opposition to the Chaplins and their political influence by the 1820s. The catalog includes columns for "Names of Plots &c."; "Acres by Estimation"; "State of Land"; and "Occupiers." Anyone wishing to view the premises is encouraged to apply to one Mr. J.
