This volume presents a critical edition, with a doctrinal introduction, of the ?Quaestiones de tempore? delivered by William of Alnwick, disciple of Duns Scotus. It is interesting to note that between 1314 and 1320, Alnwick wrote three successive versions of the ?questions?, which reveal the evolution of his theory, and bear witness to the debate on this topic which occupied the early Scotists. The exhibition examined the 'other' strain of avant garde photography in Russia. Not just Rodchenko, El Lissitzky et al, but Alexandr Grinberg, Yury Yeremin, Nikolai Andreev, Nikolai Svishchov-Paola, etc. This is Russian pictorial photography from 1900 to the 1930's. Het museum is vandaag internationaal bekend als de thuishaven van de befaamde Dulle Griet van Pieter Bruegel de Oude. Voor Antwerpenaren is het museum vooral een goed bewaard geheim. Tegelijkertijd is er altijd de verbazing over hoe zoveel moois op één plek kon worden samengebracht. Wie heeft dit verzameld? Het museum is een monument dat herinnert aan twee personen, Henriëtte van den Bergh (1838-1920) en Fritz Mayer van den Bergh (1858-1901). De gehele collectie werd bijeengebracht door Fritz, een man met een uitgesproken belangstelling voor de middeleeuwen en de renaissance. Na het vroegtijdige en onverwachte overlijden van Fritz op 4 mei 1901 was het zijn moeder, Henriëtte van den Bergh, die het museum voor zijn kunstwerken liet bouwen. Daarmee bewaarde zij deze uitzonderlijke collectie en slaagde ze er tegelijk in de herinnering aan haar zoon levendig te houden. Het museum opende zijn deuren in 1904. Dit boek biedt een inkijk in de geschiedenis van het museum en zijn stichters. Blaise Pascal (16231662) the great French scientist and religious philosopher, was famous as a youth. He wrote a paper, before he was 16, on conic sections which won the respect of the mathematicians of Paris. At 19 he invented a calculating machine. Credited with founding the modern theory of probability, Pascal also discovered the properties of the cycloid and contributed to the advance of differential calculus. In physics his experiments increased knowledge of atmospheric pressure through barometric measurements and of the equilibrium of fluids (see Pascal's law). As a young man, Pascal came under the influence of Jansenism, and in 1651 his sister Jacqueline, who had also embraced Jansenist beliefs, entered the convent at Port-Royal, the center of the movement. As a result of the death of his father and of his own narrow escape from death, Pascal in 1654 experienced what he called a "conversion" and thereafter turned much of his attention to religion. When Antoine Arnauld, a noted Jansenist, was attacked by the Jesuits, Pascal championed him in his Lettre escrite à un provincial (1656). Those Provincial Letters, rendered into Latin, quickly circulated throughout Europe, and they still hold a leading place in the literature of polite irony. Pascal's religious writings were posthumously published as Pensées de M. Pascal sur la religion et sur quelques autres sujets (1670). In the Pensées, famous both as a religious and philosophical classic, Pascal states his belief in the inadequacy of reason to solve man's difficulties or to satisfy his hopes. He preached instead the final necessity of mystic faith for true understanding of the universe and its meaning to man. W145 Rt/R.

In 1921 they bought the Villa Razzolini and their home became a meeting place for intellectuals visiting Florence. From the mid 1930s they lived in Switzerland, New York and Dublin, but in 1947 they returned to their villa in Florence. After her death in 1971 the villa was left to the John Hopkins University".
