After a short time, the party was set upon by Indians and Spencer soon found himself a captive. For several days, he was taken across country but treated with some kindness. After an attempted escape, he was recaptured when tempted by a patch of raspberries. On the 13th of July, the group reached the junction of the Auglaize and Maumee rivers_the site of Fort Defiance_where he was adopted into an Indian Family. He was later ransomed and ultimately reached relatives in New Jersey and finally his family in Columbia, on the Ohio River. The story was first told forty years after the events, in a piece written for publication in the Western Christian Advocate in 1834. Spencer had become a Methodist Episcopal minister and lived in Cincinnati. LOC W17
