A study on Knidos or Cnidus is an ancient settlement located in south-western Asia Minor, modern-day Turkey. It was an ancient Greek city of Caria, part of the Dorian Hexapolis. It was situated on the Datça peninsula, which forms the southern side of the Sinus Ceramicus, now known as Gulf of Gökova. By the 4th century BC, Knidos was located at the site of modern Tekir, opposite Triopion Island. But earlier, it was probably at the site of modern Datça (at the half-way point of the peninsula).

Translated from Turkish into English Inci Türkoglu. Historically, balance weights are as old as the balances themselves. Actually, balance and weight examples of Mesopotamian, Egyptian and Hittite civilisations are known from wall paintings, reliefs, papyri and collections. However, the scope of this book is the balance weights produced and used in the Aegean world during the Classical and Hellenistic periods. Balance weights were among the instruments of public sphere (instrumenta publica) of antiquity and they constitute an important group of antiquities worth studying for their unit marks, symbols, depictions, inscriptions and ornaments. However, balance weights have been among the most neglected artefacts within archaeological research. Certainly, this work at handbook level should not be expected to fill the gap entirely, but rather call attention to this field. The examples were chosen from the city-states in the Aegean world and cover only those which bear ethnic or symbol (parasemon). CONTENTS: FOREWORD. INTRODUCTION. Scope, material, and sources. History of research in the light of basic publications. 1. AN OVERVIEW OF WEIGHTS: Form, material, and manufacture. Symbols (parasema) and other depictions. Denominations. Ethnic. Corpus Ponderum Antiquorum et Islamicorum Turkey 3: Suna and Inan Kiraç Foundation Collection at the Pera Museum. Part 2: Late Roman and Byzantine weights. There are over five thousand weights from the Suna and Inan Kiraç Foundation Collection at the Pera Museum, ranging in date from the Ancient Near Eastern Civilizations, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman periods. This large collection will be published in a number of separate volumes as part of the series of Corpus Ponderum Antiquorum et Islamicorum. The first volume covers 635 Greek and Roman weights. The Roman truncated spheres are included in the second volume, which covers the Late Roman and Byzantine weights. The majority of the weights in the Suna and Inan Kirac Foundation Collection were acquired over a period of thirty years by Inan Kirac through various local and international auctions and collectors. The present second volume, completed in a three-year-long study, covers the Late Roman and Byzantine weights in the same collection. The catalogue covers 742 weights, 38 of which are of glass. The majority of the weights were acquired between 2005 and 2008. In the catalogue 201 weights are grouped under the title of "Commercial Weights" while 456 weights are grouped under the title of "Coin Weights". Furthermore, the catalogue covers circular weights with concentric circles and bowl-shaped weights both of which date to the Middle Byzantine Period.
