OB 1Edinburgh: Printed For Stirling And Slade. 1819. Hard Cover. 8vo; five volumes. Bound in contemporary full calf spines worn at tops and bottoms hinges cracking. First published in two volumes in 1638 with an Amsterdam imprint although actually printed at the Duke's chateau the Memoirs were originally written in the second person. In 1745 the Abbé de l'Ecluse rewrote them in ordinary narrative form. The English translation by Charlotte Lennox first appeared in 1756. A valuable source for the history of France from 1580 to 1635 this work reflects the important role played by Sully as superintendent of finances for Henry IV. The binding is in poor condition with heavy wear to the boards spine partially gone exposing cords hinges tender but intact contents remarkably clean with only the usual age-toning. Sully 1560-1641 was a Huguenot soldier financier and statesman who became Henry IV's chief minister and under his often autocratic guidance restored stability and solvency to France's affairs. He left a collections of memoirs written in the second person first published in 1634 which are valuable as a history of the times. Our offering is the second volume of these memoirs commencing with chapter 71 and concluding with a comprehensive Table of Contents. Historians state that he was of great importance by building a strong centralised administrative system. Sully's memoirs were written in the second person and are a valuable account of the history of the time as well as for autobiographical reasons. In full calf bindings with gilt stamping to the spines and board edges. Externally sound with slight rubbing to the joints and to the spine. Loss to the head and tail of spines. Front joint to volume Vi is tender with the hinge tender with cords showing. Rear hinge to volume VI is slightly strained but firm. Front joint and hinge to volume V are tender. Evidence of repair to the top of spine to volume V. Small loss to the head and tail of spine to volume IV. Loss to the tail of spine to volume III. Hinges to volume III are slightly strained but firm. Large loss to the backstrip of volume II at the head and tail. Both hinges and joints to volume II are tender with cords showing. Front joint and hinge to volume I are weak and may detach with further handling. Evidence of previous owner's amateurish repair to the hinge/joint. Loss to the head and tail of spine to volume I. Rear hinge to volume I is tender. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown of all volumes Ralph Nicholson. Internally all volumes are firmly bound. 193977015Normal Illinois: Vulcan Publications 1939. Pre-war science fiction fanzine with some superb mimeograph work to the front cover reproducing a drawing attributed to "Sully". The editor and cover artist are almost certainly Clarence Willard "Sully" Roberds 1918-74 who was an associate of Bob Tucker and editor of the better-known fanzine Fantasy Fictioneer. Roberds was also the publicity director for the Illinois Fantasy Fictioneers. <br /> <br /> This issue is described as a convention issue and the event though not named is likely the Third Chicago Conference which was held during April 1940 in Bloomington Indiana. The zine is undated. OCLC locates no holdings; however there is a copy in the Hevelin Collection at the University of Iowa which assigns a date of 1939.<br /> <br /> Standard A4 format 8 1/2" x 11": 4 p. Mimeographed and bound with two staples. The top leaf has separated from the staples. Some general toning with a few minor tears and creases. Vulcan Publications unknown

It is dated January 1885 and a pencil notation at the top of the page suggests that it was signed while Cable was on a literary tour with his friend Mark Twain. In very good condition. unknown
