Maximilien de Béthune Herzog von Sully starb am 21. 1757ST14844London: A. Millar; J. Dodsley; and W. Shropshire 1757. Second Edition. 222 x 140 mm. 8 3/4 x 5 1/2. Five volumes.
Contemporary gray paper boards backed in sheep with unusual wavy edges raised bands black morocco labels with gilt titling. Front pastedowns with armorial bookplate of Francis Eyre of Warkworth Northamptonshire. Corners slightly bumped and edges a little tattered one spine with minor loss to leather in one compartment boards a bit rubbed but overall the contemporary bindings very sound and in excellent condition; the occasional small blemish a few marginal open tears one closed tear minimally affecting text but internally very well preserved in general.

This is the first English translation of the memoirs of French statesman Maximilien de Béthune Duke of Sully undertaken either by Samuel Johnson or by best-selling female novelist Charlotte Lennox and offered here in the original unsophisticated and unusual bindings. A Huguenot of noble family Sully 1560-1641 was presented to the Protestant King Henri of Navarre when he was 11 years old and became permanently attached to that monarch until the king's assassination in 1610. Sully although a lifelong Protestant himself encouraged Henri to convert to Catholicism in order to become King Henri IV of France arranged for the marriage of Henri to Marie de Medici and served as a lifelong advisor and confidante to the king. His insider's views of this crucial period of French history make his "Memoirs" of continuing interest to scholars. Originally published in French in 1638 the first edition in English appeared well over 100 years later in 1756 a year before our second edition. The ESTC notes that the translator may have been Samuel Johnson but the book itself as well as later editions credits Charlotte Lennox ca. 1729-1804 author of popular women's adventure novels including "The Female Quixote." She was born in the American colonies but spent her working life in England where literary friends and supporters included the aforementioned Johnson. The bindings here are not extraordinarily attractive but they are interesting as specimens of an unusual slightly rustic design: the wavy edges where the leather and paper meet are clearly purposeful and add a playful element not usually seen in modest bindings such as these. His principal work was concerned with financial administration. He reconstructed an administration which had been dislocated by 30 yrs of civil war. He established a rigorous control. 181534134Philadelphia: Murray Draper Fairman & Co. and J. Webster 1815. Hand-coloured engraving. This example is beautifully printed in the mid 20th-century from the original 19th-century copper plate with wide margins on hand-made paper. The Battle of Lake Erie was the first naval engagement of the War of 1812. The British had gained control of the lake in August 1812 when General Hull surrendered at Detroit. Among those captured was a master ship-builder from Erie Pa. named David Dobbins. After his release from custody Dobbins went to Washington and persuaded the U.S. Government to literally build a naval fleet on Lake Erie in order to challenge the British for its control. Dobbins then went immediately to Erie and rapidly constructed six ships. Meanwhile five more ships were sailed to Erie making a fleet of eleven. In September 1813 Oliver Hazard Perry took command of nine of these ships and set off to engage the British fleet which was captured after three hours of fierce battle; whereupon Perry sent his historic message: "We have met the enemy and they are ours." In May 1814 Commander Perry wrote approvingly to the publishers about the accuracy of this print: "I have no hesitation in pronouncing them a correct representation of the engagement at those particular moments."

Stauffer American Engravers Upon Copper and Steel 2288; Grolier The United States Navy 1776-1815 121; Olds Bits and Pieces of American History 241. Brought up in the Reformed faith Maximilien was presented to Henry of Navarre in 1571 and was thereafter attached to the future King of France. After studying at the College of Bourgogne he studied history and mathematics at the court of Henry of Navarre and on the outbreak of the Civil War enlisted in the Protestant Army. He displayed bravery in the field and exhibited a talent as an engineer. In 1583 he served as Henry's special agent in Paris. With the renewal of the Civil War in 1589 he served in the Army and was wounded at the battle of Ivry. As soon as Henry's power was established Maximilien received rewards in the form of estates and dignities. He was made the sole superintendent of Finances in 1598 and brought order to the countries financial affairs introducing several influential and important changes dealing with trade and economy. In 1599 Maximilien was appointed Commissioner of Highways and Public Works Superintendent of Fortifications and Artillery; in 1602 Governor of Mantes 1604 Governor of Poitou and in 1606 Duke and Peer of Sully. Sully's influence was widespread; he encouraged agriculture urged free circulation of produce promoted stock raising planned a system of canals and forbade the destruction of the forests. He strengthened the French military establishment promoting the construction of great lines of defences on the frontiers. He represented Henry at the Court of King James I arranged Henry's marriage to Marie De Medicis and helped to put down several revolts by the nobility. Sully's political power and influence ended with assassination of Henry IV in 1620. While he was unpopular with his colleagues he nonetheless exhibited a gifted executive ability throughout his career as well as an unbending loyalty to the King. Sully was largely responsible for the transformation in France between 1598-1610 when agriculture and commerce improved and foreign peace and internal order were maintained. . Revised Edition.
