He learned painting from his brother Lawrence whose widow he subsequently married and from his brother-in-law Jean Belzons; he later studied with Benjamin West in London. He moved to various locations settling in Philadelphia in 1808 where he quickly became its leading portrait painter a position he held until his death. <br /> This letter to the famous historian Benson Lossing is in response to Lossing's request for the character and appearance of "the late Commodore Decatur.he demeaned himself as a perfect gentleman. His form was perfect. I painted him for the City of New York 12 of July 1814." It is one of his most famous portraits now in City Hall New York. It is a full figure portrait with Decatur leaning on the hilt of his sword and with Castle William and New York Bay in the background. Karpel I-1351 states ".Describes materials and procedures for portrait painting. Sully's handbook reveals many of the techniques used by himself and his contemporaries including Allston West Leslie and Trumbull in the preparation of varnishes canvases and flesh-tones." Slight separation of vellum from board on front cover still a very desirable book in solid condition. Extremely scarce. The book was reprinted by Faber Birren and Reinhold in 1965. Lithograph 10.5" x 8.5" plus margins. <p>A scarce and very fine lithographic portrait of Fanny Kemble as Julia in James Sheridan Knowles' play The Hunchback after a painting by Thomas Sully. Kemble and her father toured the United States in 1832-1833 immediately following her much acclaimed performance as Julia in London. Both Sully's painting and this lithograph reproducing it were executed in 1833. Randall Esq. it reads "Dear Sir. It will give me great pleasure to recieve sic the "History of New York" published by the Legislature of the State which you have kindly proffered me. Please send by Adams' Express to my address -- No. 11 South 5th St. or to W. Pennington Book seller No. 10 South 5th. Very Respectfully Your Obedient Servany signed Tho Sully." The folded into approximate sixths note measures 5 and 3/8 inches tall by 8 inches wide. Three small old archival mount remnants on the reverse of the document. In very good plus condition without any stains or smudging. Thomas Sully lived 1783 to 1872. He was born in England and moved to the United States as a boy. Studied with his brother Lawrence died 1803 opened a studio in New York 1806 and Philadelphia 1808. Known to have painted more than 2600 works. Among his best known are "Washington Crossing the Delaware" "Marquis de Lafayette" and "Jefferson Madison Jackson.". No date listed; circa 1870. Not published Paperback
